Manually Save Download Location

Why is it that Safari 5.0.3. for Windows now allows you to manually choose the download location for files, but Safari 5.0.3. for Mac doesn't? What is the reasoning for Apple to give their Windows version more options than OS X?

The options for OS X only allows you to choose where Safari will automatically save the downloads. On the Windows version, you get the following options:

"Save downloaded files to:" then you choose the location. Under that option you have a checkbox that says:
"Always prompt before downloading. Prompting cannot be disabled for some high-risk file types, including applications."

That option allows you to choose where to store the download before the download begins. This is an option not available on the Mac version.

Dragging the file to its final to its final location is an option but not an answer to my question, which is why isn't the manual download option available for Mac users. I have three browsers on my computer (Chrome, Firefox, and Safari), and Safari is the only one that doesn't provide this option. Now Windows users have this option. I really like Safari and would like to use it as my default browser, but this one missing option is enough for me to turn away from it. It seems odd that Apple, the company that makes Macs/OS X and Safari, would provide this extremely convenient option for Microsoft users and not their own.

In Safari 5 for Mac, right click the link you want to download and select "Download Linked File As..." then when the save as dialog opens there will be a button with an down-pointing triangle to the right of the filename in the top of the dialog. Click the butto so the triangle points up and the dialog will open to let you select the location to save the file.

Unfortunately, this only saves an html link to where the file may be stored, not the file itself.

For instance, when I try to download a filed called "abcdef.csv" using the method suggested by Gregg53's in his 7/6/11 message, it simply saves a url in the desired folder called "abcdef.csv.html"--NOT the intended file. And then, because I'm using gmail (apparently) it asks me to log into my mailbox again--but fails.

Basically, Safari just doesn't presentlyl have the ability to download to a specified location on the fly.

I have done some in-depth research for the last three hours about how to efficiently save my downloads with Safari in a wide variety of forums, through google search and in this forum. Seemingly this issue has not been solved for at least four years. How so?

It is definitely not practical if all downloads are automatically saved into one single folder - it is time and energy-consuming to get them out of there and save them in the place you want them to. Neither is it an option to right click on every file since some formats cannot be saved properly in this way. It is absolutely necessary to be able to decide where to save a downloaded file and under which title individually. This could easily be solved if there was the option to be asked by Safari where the files should be downloaded to and under which title - just like every other browser does it.

To learn that this is now possible for Safari under Windows but not for MacOS astonishes me - to put it lightly.

Dear Apple developers, please do us the favor and implement the checkbox "Always prompt before downloading." in Safari for MacOS. Soon.
