getting rid of image noise - is there a "smart blur" filter?

I have some old VHS video footage that I would like to convert to dvd. The footage has quite a lot of image noise. Is there a filter plugin that smoothes/blurs low-detail areas while retaining sharp edges? (sort of like "smart blur" in Photoshop?)

(I also posted this question for FCP, since I am considering it)

Hi Martin. There's an effect in iMovie called "Soft Focus", and when you use it, you can adjust it in many ways. You can try playing around with the "Softness" "Amount" and "Glow" settings on that effect. I'm not sure if that's what you want though, iMovie doesn't have much Photoshoppy stuff to work with.
