Thank you - this worked for my "just went black" iPad!
my ipad2 hasnt worked for a few days. I could hear it turn on but could see nothing but black screen. I tried the hard reset the first day but it did not work. I tried it again and it is working. Although I do have some black shadow like dots on the left side of the screen. I would like to know why and how to fix them. otherwise, i am thrilled that my ipad is working again!!!!!!!
This was a HUGE help! Now that the iPad is back on, I see that it's at 73% so there is no reason whatsoever that it went black. Holding both the home key and power button at the same time for nearly 20 seconds turned it back on. One note is that you don't release the buttons until the iPad turns on.
When the iPad unexpectantly turns off and the screen remains blank you should suspect the the battery has completely drained. Plug it into the charger that came with it and wait one hour. It may take that long before an iPad with a completely drained battery responds. Then reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
If the iPad restarts let it continue to charge until the battery is 100%. If the iPad does not restart make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support. Be sure to back up your device before taking or sending it to Apple.
