Where is my SYSTEM PREFERENCES?

I am a little new to the iMac and left for vacation. When I returned and tried to open up my system preferences, only two things show, Browser Plus and Growl. What happened? How do I get everything back? I hope this is a simple fix. HELP

imac 21.5", Mac OS X (10.6.5)

you could try this:

(a) download the [_*Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update Combo*_|http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1349]
(b) reboot into _*safe mode*_
(c) launch *disk utility* (in applications/utilities), +verify disk+ and +repair permissions+
(d) run the combo
(e) after running the combo, let the Mac reboot normally and +repair permissions+ again.

Another thing you can try is to go into:

youruser (i.e. your home directory) -> Library folder -> Caches folder

and delete the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache file. Then log out of your account and back in and try System Preferences again.

I just had to do a reinstall of the OS X disk for my system preferences. I lost nothing and everything is back. It was my fault on it disappearing. I did some cleaning up in the applications folder and it just did not show in my system preferences, but they were there. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Hi, I have a similar problem to fishrman, my System Preferences is not opening since I updated my iMac to Yosemite 10.10.4. When I try to open it I get the message "the application system preferences is not open anymore".

When I go into MacintoshHD -> Library -> Cache I don't see the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache file.

Do you know of another way of rebooting System Preferences?
