AppleCare vs. Insurance through Verizon Wireless

Am I better off getting the $69 AppleCare Protection instead of the $1.99 per month Verizon insurance when I get my iPhone 4? It seems like $1.99 per month will cost less over the course of two years, but I am wondering if maybe it does not cover as much as the AppleCare would cover. I know that neither of these plans covers loss or damage.

I will purchase AppleCare. I live very near the Apple store in The Summit Mall in Reno, Nevada (http://www.thesummitonline.com/reno/index.html). That mall has both an Apple Store and an Official Verizon Wireless Store. While I like Verizon Wireless, I would prefer to deal directly with Apple when I can. Plus I like the idea that they would have phones on hand for replacement, should the need arise.

Both Extended Warranty and Wireless Phone Protection are products offered by Verizon. Total Equipment Coverage is the name of the two products bundled together. Extended Warranty is not Applecare. Verizon will also sell you Applecare if you want it. There are a couple of important differences between the two. Without Applecare, you get one complimentary call to Apple Tech support within the first 90 days of ownership, after that calls are $29.99. With Apple Care, you get free calls for the entire two years. The Extended Warrany sold by Verizon does not give you that. If you need a phone replaced under Applecare, you deal with Apple. If you need a phone replaced under warranty through the Extended Warranty, you deal with Verizon. They will not have replacement phones on site. You will be shipped a replacement overnight. Neither Applecare nor the Extended warranty cover loss, theft or damage. For that you need the Wireless Phone Protection , either by itself or bundled with the Extended Warranty in Total Equipment Coverage. If your phone is lost, stolen or damaged, you will get it replaced by Asurion. There is a deductible. You will be shipped a phone overnight.

The $1.99 Extended Warranty is not insurance. The insurance product that Verizon offers is $10.99/month and covers lose, theft and damage. The Extended Warranty is closer to AppleCare. There is one very notable difference. The warranty the iPd comes with includes one free call to Tech Support within the first 90 days of ownership. After that, I believe the cost is $29.99 per incident. If you purchase AppleCare, you get free calls to tech support for two years. The Extended Warranty that Verizon offers does not give you that.
