2011 Macbook Pro 1333mhz Ram vs 1066mhz whats the difference?

I just got the new 2011 17inch MBP and I have 8gig of 1066mhz ram from my old computer but its 1066mhz would that work with my new computer?

Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You'll be running your RAM at about 1/3 over its rated speed, or else the memory clock of the new machine will slow down to run at the speed of the slower RAM (not sure what the Sandy Bridge chipset does). Either way is pretty inadvisable. If the memory is running at higher-than-spec, you'll almost certainly start getting weird system errors. If the chipset memory controller slows down to match the slower RAM, you're giving up a lot of memory bandwidth (performance). An 8 gig kit from Crucial is under a hundred bucks.

Not sure that is how it works, actually. In the PC world, the memory clock and CPU clock are not tied to each other as you state. According to Intel the i7-2720QM chip supports "Memory Types DDR3-1066/1333/1600". 1066 memory is not all that slower than 1333, because 1066 typically has a latency value of 7, whereas 1333 has a higher (slower) latency of 9. Therefore, it's typically a tradeoff...1066 is slower than 1333, but CAS 7 is faster than CAS 9. So, all-in-all, if one already had 1066 RAM lying around, I would guess it should work just fine. There is a little chip on each RAM module that has different speeds programmed in, and when you put 1066 chips in, the system reads it and adjusts accordingly. Automatically.

It's common in the PC world to do that, and I assume it works the same in these Intel-based MBP's.

I just ran into a big issue by trying to use 1066MHz instead of the recommended 1333MHz in my Macbook PRO i7 (Version 10.7.3). I got issued the wrong memory upgrade for my Mac and just discovered today that 1066MHz doesn't work on a 1333MHz computer. Things seemed to be working fine, until I tried shutting the lid to my computer to hibernate it. Whenever I'd come back later to open it up, the screen wouldn't come on, but the computer would still be running. The sleep mode would not work properly until I put my old 4GB memory back in...now it works great. I'm definately going to get the correct 1333MHz Memory for my computer and not the 1066MHz memory.

Here's an update...I just installed my new 8GB memory (1333 Mhz) in my new Macbook Pro and it works beautifully. I no longer have sleepmode problems and can open and close my computer without any problems. Everything works like it should, unlike it did when I tried running 1066 Mhz on my Mac. I'd definately recommend sticking with the correct memory. It may seem to work fine for awhile, but you may end up having problems later.
