Problems with Default Mail

have 2 email accounts on iphone... 1 is via bellsouth, the 2nd is with gmail.

i have the bellsouth listed as the Default account. due to problems sending email, i also have all servers turned "on".

problem is that when i am in the "All Inboxes" menu and go send a message or reply to one, instead of it sending the message thru my primary account (bellsouth), it insteads sends the email message thru the gmail account email address.

i would like ALL messages being sent out through the "all inboxes" menu to be sent by my bellsouth email address.

how can i do this? any help is appreciated. thank you.

Not possible.

The default email account does not apply to this. Read what the default email account applies to under your selection for the default email account at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Whichever email account is selected when reading a received messages with All Inboxes selected will be the default sending account, which can be changed with the message before the message is sent.

Allan.. thx for the reply and willingness to help, but i don't understand your answer.

the "all inboxes" function is to be a unified inbox, correct? once i am in that unified inbox or "all inboxes" menu, i read all my messages from within the "all inboxes" section, if you will. when i then reply to an email message, i reply within that same "all inboxes" menu, i originally used to retrieve the messages.

i don't "select an email account" as you suggested to reply to a message or to retrieve them. in other words, it seems that the default email address when i reply to ANY message, regardless of the account it was received from, is replied to by using the gmail as my default. i don't want that to happen, i want the bellsouth account to be the default mail that sends all my replies.

what is happening now is that if i receive a message in the "all inboxes" that has been sent to my bellsouth account, i then reply from within all inboxes, and the person will get it but it will appear as if it was sent through my gmail account. in other words, it appears as if the gmail acct is acting as my default sender, regardless if the message was viewed on all inboxes and received from bellsouth.

also, when i create new messages from the all inboxes section, it also sends it as if it was created/sent by gmail. so it doesn't matter if i am reading them with all inboxes, replying to them from all inboxes, or creating them from all inboxes, it always sends them as if it was gmail.

could you elaborate on what you mean, or am i missing something? or can anyone else chime in and let me know how i can fix this? thanks again

You're welcome.

Incorrect. It is a blended Inbox mailbox for all accounts, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the default email account.

It seems, or it does this 100% of the time? If this is what occurs 100% of the time - your Gmail account is the default account selected when replying to any message - when replying to a message received by your bellsouth account, this is not normal. When replying to a message, the default account selected for sending the message should be the account the message was received by, which there is no setting for. This is done automatically. The default email account selection has nothing to do with this.

lol..i say potato, u say pothato... geezus...

a blended inbox, that contains all your email from all your accounts, is acting as a unified inbox, and "seems" was used figuratively...but that is here nor there...

now on to seeing if someone can help solve the problem i originally posted on.

yes, 100% of the time, when i am in the ALL INBOXES menu and from within that section, i read ANY MESSAGE that is coming in from ALL email accounts via "ALL INBOXES", and i then hit reply to ANY message, instead of being sent through the bellsouth account, it ALWAYS sends it out via the gmail account. this happens, EVEN WHEN i received the message from the bellsouth account but am looking at it thru all inboxes and i have hit the 'reply' button from within that email or all inboxes section.

now, if i leave the 'ALL INBOXES' menu, and i specifically go into the bellsouth account and reply from within the bellsouth account, rather than from all inboxes, then the message is sent out through bellsouth.

so again, my question is how can i have ALL my replies and ALL newly created emails from within the ALL INBOXES section, be sent out by my bellsouth account, rather than my gmail. i have bellsouth set as my default under settings>mail, contacts, calendars.

also, if what is happening now is what the post above has mentioned and gmail is acting as my default, can someone please be less vague and specifically take me through the settings as to how to resolve it and change it. because again, as far as i know under the settings menu, bellsouth is the default.

thanks in advance to anyone with solutions.

Copied from my first post in this thread.

+The default email account does not apply to this. Read what the default email account applies to under your selection for the default email account at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars+

When selecting new for a new message when in the Mail app, the bellsouth account will be the default account selected for the new message when doing do from in a mailbox for the account - selecting new for a new message when in the bellsouth's Inbox mailbox or Sent mailbox for example. The bellsouth account should also be the default account when replying to or forwarding a message that was sent to your bellsouth account. The default email account selection at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars has nothing to do with this.

it 'should' be, but it is isn't. that is exactly the problem i am trying to get some help with and some solutions to.

i just double checked again, and i mispoke in my last email.... ALL OF MY EMAIL MESSAGES, regardless of what view i am under (all inboxes, initial mail app page, or bellsouth inbox), are being replied to from the gmail account and in the From: field, it appears as if the email is being sent FROM: the gmail account.

can someone please help. i dont understand why ALL email messages, regardless of what view i am replying or creating an email from, is being sent through gmail.

ok never mind, i resolved problem on my own.

here is what i did, in case it helps anyone having the same problem.

what happened was that as i had posted in my initial post, i had always had very poor results sending outgoing email thru att/bellsouth's lousy servers. after many people were posting about this same problem, i went ahead and heeded others suggestions, and turned the bellsouth/att server off and changed the outgoing email smtp server to gmail's smtp server.

upon doing this, ALL OF MY EMAILS, regardless of where they were compiled from, or replied from, etc., all had the gmail acct in the From: field. in other words, it almost as if it intrudes on the acct and always makes gmail account act as the "sender" since it is using gmail's server.

i went ahead and went into the iPhone's settings, and under the Mail menu, turned the gmails smtp server to the "off" position on all the listed email accounts. now, all the emails still send but now my default email address continues to be my bellsouth account, which is exactly what i wanted. and when i want to specifically send an outgoing email via gmail, all i have to do is go into the gmail account itself and create or reply from there and it still sends it out and lists the gmail acct on the From: field.

hope it helps someone.

Dear drj101.

I'm having exactly the same problems as you, whereby if I send or reply to any email from any of my mailboxes, the email is sent from the gmail one - regardless of which is the default email, or even if I select another email from the 'from' field.

I tried your solution by turning the gmail smtp server to 'off', but it was still sending from the gmail.

I even deleted the gmail account from my phone, and it is still sending from my gmail!!! How odd is that?

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
