Regarding backups of footage/clips, Preferences, Duplicates...

I still have footage in my flash memory card in my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A. Most of it has been downloaded to my iMac but now I have some new footage.

Question: I am assuming that if I want to download the new footage that has not yet gone into my iMovie '11 application, all I do is wait for the message to come up that says, +Do you want to download duplicates as well as originals?+ And then I would click No. So then only the newly shot footage not already in iMovie will be taken out of my camcorder and the duplicates will stay in the flash memory card. I then will end up with all the footage on that flash memory card. (Which gives me a secure feeling.)

So obviously the footage is set up to be sucked into iMovie '11. *What I would like to do is then have duplicates of all my footage go to my external hard drive.* That way if for any reason the footage/clips in my iMovie '11 disappear, I have backup duplicates in my Seagate external hard drive.

1. How would I do that? Would I have to go into iMovie '11 and fiddle with the preferences and have all the uploads from my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A go to my Seagate external hard drive? Pardon this question, but I always look for the arcane wild hare possibilities: If I do such a fiddling with the preferences, I can assume that all of my clips in the Event Library will stay put, right? Just making sure....

1.a And of course, after I do the clip transfers to the external hard drive (giving me the duplicates/back ups) I would go back to the iMovie '11 preferences and set the preferences to have all new footage sucked up into iMovie'11 again (and not anywhere else). Yes?

2. When I do get the footage/clips into my external hard drive, will it be easy to pick them up again? Would I just go into my iMovie '11 app and click I mport and then select the clips that are in my external hard drive? I ask because once they are in my external hard drive in a folder, they are perhaps not arrayed in the way that iMovie wants to pick them up. They are not assembled the way the camcorder assembles them.

*P.S. I would just keep the flash memory cards with all the footage and put the cards in a showbox, but that can get costly.* The flashcards, not the shoeboxes.

I do not like to leave anything to chance, and that is why I ask all of these questions ahead of time.
