New 2011 MacBook Pro Heating Issue?

I bought the new 2011 line of MacBook Pros yesterday and was wondering if anyone else noticed that the processor heats up a lot faster causing the fans to rev up really high? I had Steam open yesterday re-downloading my games and the fan went ballistic and I don't see why when steam was only using roughly 20% CPU downloading those games. That never caused my previous MacBook Pro's fans to rev up like this.

Hi all I'm new to the forum and I'm also new to Mac, this is my first. I just want to let you guys know about mine.

I got mine yesterday from Hong Kong and it has no heating issue whatsoever. the fan would turn a bit loud when doing something intensive like game, but it doesn't feel that hot to touch although istat pro shows its at 94 degree.

on idle my macbook pro shows 40 ish degree with fan on 2000 rpm. so far the loud fan is not an issue for me. I'll let you guys know after I play with it a bit more.

I just got my brand new MBP 2011, 15", 2.2 Ghz. So far, everything works.

Yet I also experience the heat issue. Using elgato turbo .264 hd, the processor heats up to a max of 93°C within seconds after starting the video conversion. Starting around 80°C, the fans set in and max out at 6.200 rpm, cooling the mbp down to a steady 82-86°C. During the whole video conversion istat tells me, that the processor only uses 30-40%, 60-70% being idle.

Now I ask myself: When the cpu gets that hot, is that the reason for the cpu not utilizing its full power? Or is that dependant on the software?

I also ask myself, how long the mbp might survive that. I wanted to batch process 20 videos, but I quit the batch after 2 videos; i serioulsy fear, the mbp won't live for long, if one uses cpu intensive tasks over a longer period of time. Is that fear reasonible?

What shall I do? Return?

I purchased a 17inch Macbook Pro i7 2.3 GHZ with 8GB RAM, and a 500GB 7200 RPM drive. I received it on 3/3/2011. Over the weekend, I rendered video from Final Cut Studio 3 (Compressor) for SD DVD distribution and 720P Web distribution. The video is 1 hour and 16 minutes long.

My computer basically ran for nearly 24 hours straight with no issues what-so-ever. The temperature never exceeded 185 degrees Fahrenheit and averaged around 147 degrees (according to iStat). This is approximately the same temperature that my 15inch i5 2010 MBP, and my 20inch 2007 Core2Duo iMac runs at when rendering video content.

The only issue I had was with regards to my wifi connection dropping. This was caused by switching the kernel boot from 32bit to 64bit. I had to clear my PRAM (Command Option+RP on boot) and the connection has been solid since.

Overall, this computer has been great! If I had an extra $1,100, I would have opted for the 512GB SSD... 🙂

Cheers,

Mark

Hi

I bought a Macbook Pro 15' 2011 from Hong Kong just 10 days back.
- It gets really hot(upto 85 deg celsius) even with just usual torrent download, normal web browsing and watching videos in picasa..
- It vibrates sometimes when it is getting charged.
- I have some 60GB of pictures and videos on my mac. When picasa started reading those pictures and videos for the first time, screen used to flicker a lot while reading videos. I dont want to use iPhoto for organizing my photos as I dnt think iPhoto has enough capabilities as per my needs.

Right now, I am very worried about heating issue as I was planning to install Windows on mac and work on Adobe CS5 and Corel X5 simultaneously. But only Picasa eats up 94% of CPU when I am just watching a video in picasa!

This is the first time I have invested this much money for my passion for graphic designing and I have not purchased apple because of its fad. I had researched well about 2010 models and was not expecting heating issue in 2011 model.

Please throw some light if the problem is with picasa compatibility with mac or with the machine.

Regards
Vanita

Ingmar, definitely understandable. I just switched from my MBP Early 08 to the Early 11 as well, and it is quite a different in fan sound and heat. But like most people are posting here - it seems to be that is the way of these new '11 MBP - stronger and better processor...I'd definitely want the fans doing its work to cool it down!
