Music stops when screen turns off after 1.1 update

Hi,
Just after the update, my 6th gen nano won't let music files playing entirely, and i have to restart it every time i change music. This is not a headphone problem (i saw the other thread and it has anything to do with it). This definitely happens when the screen turns off, not when i shut down the ipod.
Can we find a solution for it ? this is the first time i am very disappointed, because its a MAJOR issue.
thanks to anybody for the help

My music quality is extremely important to me and i use 2 headsets with my portables, the stock Apple IE with remote, and Sennheiser MM70 IE.

Both of these I use with customised earplugs from an audiologist - they never fall out, are comfortable for long periods, and the sound quality is as close to it's potential as I can get by isolating my music from external interferences.

After the 1.1 upgrade on my Nano now, the music stops when I go to standby while using my Apple headset but the Sennheisers are still working AOK - even while in standby.

Since reading the other discussions, I am certain that there is nothing wrong with my Apple headset except an issue with the OS.

I am lucky to have the Sennheisers to continue with while using my nano but I feel it's appropriate to officially notify Apple of this problem before too many people wast $$ on new headsets unnecessarily?!

I don't doubt that some users may have damaged headset jacks, or irregularities inside their ports - I encourage everyone to treat their gear with care and respect.

Now for that report to Apple...

I have to amend my previous opinion and I apologize if I've have mislead anyone.
I went to use my Apple IE headset with my iPhone (not my Nano) and it wouldnt even work at all!?
I looked at the "sheath" wondering if it was obstructing full insertion of the plug and it was OK, it didn't look like it was damaged either.
Does the Apple IE have a fault or is it the OS's?

I notice that >7200 visitors have read / looked at this post!!

I am both comforted by the volume of users and worried that this issue still exists and for so many people!!

I will remain calm and patiently wait for Apple to resolve this wee little problem!! 😉

This is a rare problem, so all I can do is point you generally in the right direction.

1. Your first fix would be to set your Nano for a sync, then restore it. This will automatically restore the Nano to its original settings.

2. If this doesn't work, run an update the same way you did for the 1.1 update. If the original update went wrong, this should rectify the situation. Don't end the sync until the onscreen directions tell you.

3. If you are still having problems, it might be good to visit your Apple Store, if you have one nearby. Document the issue clearly, so the tech can determine if it's a software or hardware problem. Let us know that happens.

This sounds exactly like what the other problem was.

If the headset is not inserted all the way, when you playa track after a minute or so, the screen will go dim. Then the music will stop playing because the nano does not detect a fully inserted headset. If you read the other thread, then you know that just about everyone posted that there was no way it could be because the headset was not inserted all the way. Then those same folks came back a day or so later and posted that once they really made sure the headset was inserted all the way, the problem stopped.

If music stops playing when the screen goes dim, it is because the nano does not detect the headset completely (Which 99% of the time means the headset is not fully seated) - it is pretty much as simple as that.

Hi, and thank you both for taking your time to help us there. I agree with you with the plugging issue, i was always happy when i did unplug mine by inadvertance and not losing one second of my music, but... i barely broke my nano to verify it was plugged the best way, and i had the same issue. On the other thread, I am also reading replies by people who never had problems with their headphones, and it now happens with the 1.1 update.

So... what if this update made most of the headphones which are not branded apple (or friend company) completely unusable ?

My ipod too has this issue after the 1.1 update. It is definitely not the headphones because I tried a brand new apple pair just bought from the store, as well as the ones that came with the nano. Does anyone hear us? This issue needs a fix, I do believe it is a software malfunction. PLEASE fix this! My ipod is my sanctuary at work and I'd hate to have to give up on the apple brand altogether and go to walkman.

If you are seeing your playback paused when the screen turns off, it relates to your headset not being detected. That is pretty much the ONLY thing that will cause your nano to pause when the screen goes dark.

I have talked with support about this and the nano is trying to make sure that a headset is connected in order to protect battery life by not playing when a headset is not detected.

You need to triple check that your headset is plugged in all the way and make sure nothing is blocking it from being inserted all the way.

Also, look closely at the plug on the headset and make sure the part you hold when you plug it in has not slid down at all, preventing the plug from going in all the way.

If you are 100% sure that your headset is plugged in all the way (and you have double and triple checked - just check the other thread on this to see all the folks that were convinced their headset was in all the way, only to discover it was not) and it is happening to you, you need to show this to the folks in the Apple store.

This statement is false. I do believe that SOME are not plugging their headphones in properly, but I have had this Nano for approximately 3 months and never had this problem. I am still using the Apple headphones and you couldn't fit a hair in between the case and WHITE part of the headphone jack. I updated last night and now the playback stops as soon as the screen dims.

This IS NOT a problem with how it's plugged in. If you are somehow correct in the fact that it's not detecting my headphones then it's still a firmware issue because this didn't happen before I updated last night and I would have to push the headphone jack through the screen to get it in there any tighter.

I will be taking it to the Apple Store and hope them seeing it up close will help them understand that it's plugged in as far as it can possibly be.

The reason you see it in 1.1 and not 1.0 is because they added this headset detecting feature in 1.1 so that users could not leave their Nano playing with not headset attached and end up with an empty battery. Whether or not the headset is detected is ENTIRELY DEPENDENT on whether or not the headset is fully inserted.

If you are seeing this happening and you are certain that the headset jack is plugged in all the way, then you need to look very closely at your headset jack and make sure that the part your grab onto when you are inserting the headset has not slide down a bit.

If this were to happen, it would LOOK as if your headset was plugged in all the way, but because the part you grab onto has slide down a small amount, it is actually keeping your jack from being plugged in fully. Do you have any other headsets you can test on this?

Of course, there could be the extremely rare occurrences of something being stuck inside the jack that is keeping the headset plug from making full contact (lint, etc) or your headset jack might be bent slightly or something else might have damaged the female connector. But those would all by physical issues keeping the headset plug from seating all the way.

iPod Whisperer. I feel I need to apologize for my last post because now that I read it again it sounds like I was angry with you, which was not my intention. I was irritated with the situation and the fact that everyone SEEMED to be telling me I was putting my headphones in wrong.

As for the problem. I tried another set and it seems to work. I have inspected the Apple headphones and see no "slippage" for lack of a better term, where the plastic surrounds the metal tip. I would greatly miss the remote if I had to settle with my other earphones and would hate to have to shell out for another pair. The remote doesn't work on the Nano anymore either so it isn't connecting properly somehow. Yet it does perfectly with my iPhone 4 which I also updated last night....frustrating.

Again. Apologies for seeming harsh. And thank you for your help.

Hey Bio... no offense taken . 🙂

If you are getting things working fine with a different headset and your apple headset is just not working, I would take that apple headset to the apple store and show them. I would guess you would end up with a new headset.

UPDATE: Hey, I just noticed a post in the other thread that might interest you. Go over there and head to the end. Someone posted that they solved their issue by trimming the plastic collar on the headphone jack so it could go in all they way. Any chance this is what is happening with you as well?
