Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I've tried using an external (non-ACD) power supply while connecting only the mDP cable to the ACD. This might prevent blackouts/flickering/jitters for a bit longer, but I assure you, they return, and return with a vengeance!

Overall, it's hard to tell which test conditions change the "symptoms" because they appear to be sporadic. Sometimes blackouts don't happen for an hour, then they start hitting every 5 seconds. What determines this, we don't know.

Ok, does this problem appear with other ACD? Or with other displays?

As we've mentioned before on this thread, this problem is specific to the 24" ACD. The 27" ACD works properly with the Early 2011 MBPs. Other displays work properly as well, including previous Apple displays and those made by other manufacturers.

That's what makes this problem particularly frustrating: it's two Apple products that refuse to get along, a highly unusual scenario for a company that loves to sell its own ecosystem of products touting their compatibility and "it just works' functionality.

No, unfortunately the problem is NOT limited only to 24" ACDs. At least two people on this thread report the problem happening with their 27" ACDs (MJZ12956 and GeorgeB). So the problem is not limited to "previous" 24" displays but also occurs with current 27" displays that Apple is selling along with the 2011 MPSs.

Hmm, that's interesting. Apple support did confirm for me that it was a 24" issue and they would opt to replace mine with a 27" if they found out the upcoming update didn't resolve the issue.

Anybody reporting this pb with other external 24" or 27" displays (not from Apple)?

Not sure if it helps, but we tested this at our office.

The issue crops up with new 15" Macbook Pros (Thunderbolt / i7) on 24" LED ACDs at random intervals.

We have tested 2010 Macbook Pros on the same displays: no issues.

We have tested the new Thunderbolt Macbook Pros on 27" LED ACDs: no issues.

Just throwing my 7 hats in.

I posted a while back that the exact same problem also occurred with the latest Mac Pro and the 24". After a new graphics card and motherboard failed to fix the problem, Apple's rep took away the 24" for review. They were able to reproduce the problem at their workshop. They documented that they then replaced the monitor's logic board and it tested OK. The 24" has been back with us for the past 6 days and there has not been one black-out or shimmer. Like most people, I assumed it was a software issue, but it seems like there might be a hardware fix.

Ok, thanks a lot. So....What Apple is going to do with their customers? I assume Apple commercial or engineers people is reading those posts. Shall I bring back to apple store my 24" ACD? Wait for a n hypoyhetic firmware update? Please, Apple, give a reply, your commercial reputation is engaged!!

I too had this problem with my 2011 15" MBP. I called AppleCare last week and talked with a representative. She then said that engineering would like to use mine for testing so I took both my MBP and 24"ACD to my local Apple Store, and they replaced my 15" MBP and gave me a 27" ACD. They are doing everything they can and should have an answer soon for those of you still experiencing these problems.

    Good Luck.

Add me to the list, experiencing same issues with a new Macbook Pro and an 18 month old 24" Cinema Display. Flickering and garbled/mashed graphics. I am also using Windows 7 on bootcamp and first saw it whilst running Windows so put it down to an MS thing. Was pretty surprised when I saw same issues with OSX!

Fingers crossed there is a fix for this!

Thinking about it, doesn't the fact that the issue occurs in both OSX and Windows indicate that it is a hardware/firmware issue or is it just drivers that need to be updated for both operating systems??

I have a 2011 Macbook pro 17" connected to a 24" cinema display.  THe darn thing flickers and goes black all day long.  It is very tiresome.

Is there a fix?  If you need my address to send me a new thunderbolt monitor let me know.

    thx

    I have a 27" Apple cinema display (18 month old) with 2011 MBP 15" i7.

Flickers on/off very regularly or bottom part seems to shift to the right.

At work I have a dell 17" and that works fine.

Apple need to fix this quickly, its been far too long!!

Brand new MBP, and 24 inch Apple LED Display. 2nd day of using this system. Black screen appearing with greater frequency (every minute for past few minutes). The now-at-home MBP Unibody (2009) using same exact monitor never displayed this problem. It is as if I am hitting one of the hot corners that blank the display, although that is not the case.

Upsetting! Dare I say I'm "thunderously" disappointed? Is there a fix on the horizon?

    Respectfully,

    Harley Cudney
