Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

This is not restricted to the 24"ACD. My intermittent power-offs are with a brand new 27" ACD running from a 17"MBP.

Then get your 27" fixed or replaced, because from the various testimonies I read about it, 27" is working fine with 2011 MBP.

I'm having the same issues with my new MacBook Pro 15 with a high-res matte display and my one year old 24 LED Cinema Display: Black outs, jitter, and distortions. I have not figured a way to minimize the annoying behaviour. The display has been (and does) working flawlessly with a MBP 17 from 2008.

I have been in contact with Apple today. t took a while o conveince them, that bringing in the new MBP probably wouldn't solve the issue. In the end I got hold of a Senior Advisor and he mailed me a Capture App, that has registred different things about the MBP. The result has been mailed back to Apple.

I hope this will help them find a solution. I encourage everybody with this issue to contact Apple support.

Hi John, strange because mine seems to have settled down too after a weeks worth of use and a bit of ragging!

Yep it's strange... My problem returned after a while, but I'm sure it's less and workable for sure.

However, the problem needs to be fixed by Apple. It's unacceptable.

    My own story:

    - I received my 24" led cinema display in april 2010 and connected it to a 15" MBP (late 2008). It had some black flashes, randomly, 2 or 3 times p/h. I've alerted apple support and did nothing else because I was hoping that it was a firmware issue, and waited for an update.

    - I've bought a new 2011 13" macbook i7 (2.7mhz). The small problem became a big problem: black flashes, sometimes every 20s, mosaic image (dock upside ...). The display became unusable. I called Apple support, and I brought the screen to an Apple technical center.

    - The LCD panel has been changed. When I tooked it back, I had approx. the same issues: random black flashes with increased fan speed (?). No more mosaic image, but image distortion very often.

    - I brought back the screen to the Apple Tech. Waited 10 days. And get news from them: the 24" Apple display will no longer be repaired, because it's a known issue and a firmware update is coming soon. I asked: when? Answer: they do not know.

At this point,I am surprised by the inability of Apple to resolve a connection problem between two machines of it's own brand. Probably a few new MBP are connected to à 24" ACD, the issue is not easy to test, and finally a few users are concerned.

But , dear Apple, I bought a MBP and an ACD because they were sold to work together. And they don't!

I just updated and got a screen blackout within the first minute after restarting....please tell me I was dreaming.  Can anyone confirm if this update actually fixes it for them?

Did you install both the software and firmware updates?  I installed both and haven't experienced flickering or black screens... yet.  Granted, it has only been a few minutes.

The update IS out and it specifically mentions external display + Thunderbolt support. Will install, test, and report back soon. Cross your fingers everybody!

I was prompted for a firmware update too once I installed the software update and rebooted.  So far so good. (fingers crossed for luck)

You're not alone after all.  My screen just got 2 blackouts about an hour after installing both updates.  Crap.

Interestingly, I noticed that the build numbers don't match up after installing the updates.  The software update says that my build number should read 10J4035, but it instead reads 10J4138.  I have no idea if that is significant or not.  I just thought I'd note it.

Did you got similar issue, but less frequently (1 or 2 per hour) with previous Macs, particularly with NVidia 9400M equipped Macs (MacBook (Pro) 2008 and Mac Mini 2009)?

I personally got similar issue with MacBook 2008 and Mac Mini 2009, and I got my screen fixed (logic board changed) for that. There may be two kind of 24", those which only showed issue with 2011 MBP and don't require any hardware fix and should work fine with the update, and those having this issue with older Macs too (even if less frequently with 1 or 2 blackout per hour at worse), that requires a hardware fix additionnally.
