May 5, 2011 6:57 AM in response to DanRybby mjz12956,Same issue. . . perhaps a little less frequent.
Dear Apple,
Looking for a resolution to the problem ASAP! While I can appreciate your always looking for first time buyers, it is the repeat buyers - such as the folks writing in the support communities - that guarantee your long term profitability.
Sincerely,
Owner of 6 Macbook Pro's

May 5, 2011 8:18 AM in response to mjz12956by helloniklas,Installed all the updates and problem is still there. Even had a complete split screen freeze and had to reboot... But black outs appear as before... Might ask for a refund now and get something else. Not acceptable for the price.

May 5, 2011 8:52 AM in response to DanRybby Kevin Wojniak,Question for you all: when do you see the flickering/blackouts the most? For me, it is the first 1/1.5 hours after connecting the display at the beginning of the day (when I come to work). After that, it is mostly fine for the rest of the day, maybe a few issues, but it's always worse when I first connect it. I have a theory that once the computer is "warmed up" it somehow reduces the problem...
I just did the EFI update and haven't seen any issues yet, but from what I've reading here I'm not expecting it to be fixed. Will report back later today.

May 5, 2011 9:06 AM in response to DanRybby jyang86,for me, it's the opposite. The first hour or so is usually blackout-free. once they start happening, they get more and more frequent until it has the split screen freeze problem.

May 5, 2011 9:09 AM in response to jyang86by Kevin Wojniak,I see this too when the blackouts start happening. Usually if I disconnect the cable and reconnect it, it stabilizes somewhat again for the rest of the day (I don't think I've had to disconnect/connect the cable twice before).

May 5, 2011 9:10 AM in response to jyang86by lachness,jyang86,
This is what I see as well. Flickering to begin with, then escalating to blackouts. Then the split screen freeze problem. I then disconnect my 24 ACD from MBP and reconnect and go again....... Very productive development environment.

May 5, 2011 9:58 AM in response to mjz12956by Condios,"MacBook Pro owners will want to check out MacBook Pro Software Update 1.4,"
did that
"they can install the MacBook Pro EFI Update 2.1,"
Huh? These updates didn't change a thing on my MacBook Pro 15" with 24" Cinema display.
Same as before, it still is....
Hoping for a 1.5 or 2.2 that will finally change things :-))

May 5, 2011 10:00 AM in response to Kevin Wojniakby Condios,For me, it's whenever I start using screen intensive apps.
Video, is such one, that creates a real mess.
But at the same time, safari can produce problems to.
Surely, it must have to do with a) dynamic graphics switching and/or b) graphics memory allocation.

May 5, 2011 10:13 AM in response to Condiosby yvesfrombuc,It looks like a hardware warm-up problem (random, not like for everybody). Dilatation? Connecting issue?
This will be very hard to solve, if it is a design mistake. I would not want to be Apple this time :-)

May 5, 2011 10:29 AM in response to lachnessby Condios,Actually, if you wait long enough after the "split screen freeze" occurs, the situation actually redresses itself to normal operation. Then all symptoms come back. Looks like it is cyclic. Very strange behavior indeed.

May 5, 2011 10:31 AM in response to yvesfrombucby njbagger,No change what so ever .
Please report to Apple Support, that you have the issue. My experience is, that they are trying to address the issue. The more cases they have the higher is the possibility, that they can actually solve this most annoying issue.

May 5, 2011 11:36 AM in response to DanRybby El Presidente,I'm seriously considering putting mine up for sale, buying a refurb 2010 model and waiting until Ivy Bridge/Haswell. I was really banking on this update and to have it not solve anything is turning out to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Didn't they do proper testing?
Are those with 27" ACDs still having problems? What about 13" owners?
-
May 5, 2011 12:22 PM in response to El Presidenteby msinanian,Just got off the phone with Apple Customer Relations and here's their final solution for me:
- They've authorized me to return my 24" ACD at no charge to me (obviously).
- They've offered 2 coupons (cannot be combined, $100 off a $300+ product / each coupon) that I can put towards a 27" ACD.
Snag: I can buy a 27" ACD on Amazon for $930 out the door (tax+shipping), which is about $60 cheaper than buying from the Apple Store even with their lousy coupon! ($1,000 - $100 (coupon) + $90 (tax) = $990)
Another note: Apple feels as if the return authorization and the coupons are already "going out of their way enough" for this issue. It frees me from having to use their dysfunctional monitor and lets me buy another one that functions with the 2011 MBPs.
My response: OK, fine, sure, but... really? That's good customer service? They're both products MADE BY YOU! Shouldn't you just let me upgrade to your 27" free of any charge what so ever and return and rebuy hassle? Go figure...

May 5, 2011 1:00 PM in response to msinanianby Kyle O'Bannon,How long have you had your 24-inch ACD? I wonder if they'd let me do the same considering mine is 2 years old.
-
May 5, 2011 1:04 PM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby Condios,So I guess the 27" ACD is not suffering this problem? Please confirm. Tx
