Jul 12, 2011 9:55 AM in response to DanRybby pgray,I am experiencing similar issue with external Dell 30 inch display. This display worked fine with my 2009 Macbook Pro.
Upgraded my laptop to 2011 Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and now my display goes completely blank or completely fuzzy several times per hour. The latest firmware patch did nothing to improve it.

Jul 12, 2011 10:50 PM in response to Hey Ryanby WSY,Have been experiencing the same issues as everybody else is reporting here. Own a MBP, 15", i7, 2011, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD graphics 3000 and ACD 24" and recently installed gfxCardstatus and using the discrete only mode. It has stopped the flickering and the total blackout immediately - will have to wait and see how permanent this solution will be. Will post soon how well it worked.

Jul 13, 2011 8:09 AM in response to WSYby pgray,WSY's post needs to be marked as the Correct Answer.
While I have only tried this solution for about 2 hours now , from my experiences so far it does indeed seem to fix the issue. I downloaded gfxCardstatus and set it to always use Discreet graphics and since doing that my display has not flickered once. It has only been a couple of hours so far, but prior to installing this software my display would have blanked about 5 or 6 times per hour.
By the way in addition to gfxCardstatus, here is something else that others might find useful :
After submitting my post, I used changedetection.com to monitor this thread and it alerted me to WSY's post. I find the changedetection site very useful for things like this. Saves me always going back to the forum to see if someone posted something to a thread I am interested in . Now I just wait until changedetection alerts me.

Jul 13, 2011 9:42 AM in response to pgrayby Kevin Wojniak,^ the forums here allow you to subscribe via email.
Also, I just started using gfxCardStatus less than an hour ago with Discrete mode and still getting blackouts.
2 hours isn't nearly long enough to test. You'd want to test at least a few days of constant use.

Jul 13, 2011 9:52 AM in response to WSYby DJ John Dow,This is NOT a solution. It's only deals with sympthoms, in several cases.
Why should you only want to use discrete mode? (Less performance.) -
Jul 13, 2011 10:18 AM in response to pgrayby ericthecat,Apart from (as others have said) 2 hours not being long enough to test thoroughly, its not an option for those of us seeing this problem with 13" MBPs who don't have discrete graphics.

Jul 13, 2011 11:20 AM in response to Kevin Wojniakby pgray,Hi Kevin, you are correct that you can subscribe by email, thanks for mentioning that.
I should have pointed out that changedetection.com lets you be advised of changes to any thread on any site, or any web page for that matter without having to be a member of the particular site.
In terms of using gfxCardStatus I agree that 2 hours is not a very lengthy test period and a few days would be better. However I am now at about 5 hours without a single flicker. Prior to installing gfxCardStatus my screen would flicker 5 or 6 times per hour (sometimes considerably more often ) and it was driving me nuts.
It is unfortunate that it does not seem to be the solution for all users. Everyone's setup is different I guess, and I should not have said it was THE solution, but one that appeared to work for me.
Anyways here is my setup for anyone interested in what configuration gfxCardStatus does seem to be a solution for.
15 inch 2011 Macbook Pro ( quad core i7 , thunderbolt, 8gb RAM, 512GB SSD)
OSX 10.6.8
Dell 30 inch display connected via Apple mini display port to dual link dvi
As I say the problem was driving me nuts and now for me at least it seems fixed. Other users have pointed out that it is not a solution but just addresses symptoms. Whether it is a solution or just addresses symptoms does not really matter to me. What matters is my screen no longer blanks out.
Cheers...peter

Jul 13, 2011 11:26 AM in response to Kevin Wojniakby pgray,Hi Kevin,
I just wanted to mention I had to set my gfxCardStatus to Discrete in 3 places. Twice in the preferences ( On Battery , as well as Plugged In).
I also then checked the drop down menu after setting the preferences and it still showed Dynamic, so I changed it to Discrete there in the drop down menu as well.
You may have already done all this, but thought it worth mentioning as I almost overlooked that the drop down menu did not change after I had updated the preferences.
Cheers...peter

Jul 13, 2011 11:41 AM in response to pgrayby 4rchitech,FWIW, I installed gfxCardStatus per Peter's advice, and the blackouts are MUCH more infrequent. Been running for a few hours now and only had 1 blackout, whereas I usually would have had 20-30 and would have disconnected it from the monitor by now.
15" early 2011 MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt... 8Gb ram, 480Gb SSD, 24" ACD...

Jul 13, 2011 12:48 PM in response to pgrayby ivanlee1957,Though I tried this many moths ago I tried it again today (the gfx card status thing)....... did everything you said....... first blackout within 45 minutes.......
No folks, this is not the answer!

Jul 18, 2011 7:46 AM in response to ivanlee1957by mmccaskill,Yes I've had no luck completely stopping blackouts, fuzzy symptoms, etc. I've even tried the MonoPrice dual-link DVI adapter. Same results. This is very frustrating.

Jul 18, 2011 12:36 PM in response to DanRybby kirbyfromreno,Just installed gfxCardStatus (discrete mode). Blackouts are less frequent, but still happens. First occurence happened within 30 min of installing gfxCardStatus.

Jul 19, 2011 8:27 AM in response to DanRybby elhombre,Today I called the Apple support again, It's been two months of flickering and irritating hangs and all I got was "you can only wait and see", "our technicians is working overtime.." yadayadayada.
I tried to get it printed, among other thing they said, but they had a policy that only phone answers were allowed (next time I'll record for sure). Even talked to a manager but same there.
The manager will call the shop I got my MBP and see if I can get a refund, swapping the unit would be pointless. (Without the printouts I have no case in the shop)
Looks like the support in the states is a little more customer oriented offering change of display with money between.
Personally I think it's a hardware issue and they can scoof this under the mat when warranty for all the 24" runs out. Leaving us in the drain. Dramatic i know

Jul 19, 2011 8:52 AM in response to elhombreby Lexus Luthor,There is apparently an update to the new ACD's. It seems that the only thing updated is the addition of a TB cable for the new laptops w/ the TB ports. Maybe that would be a solution for all of our issues.
