Aug 2, 2011 8:47 PM in response to DanRybby llg696,New Mac Mini mid 2011, upgraded to i7, running Lion updated as of today. Exact same issues as everybody here with the 24" LED display. Went today to the Genius Bar with a video recorded on my Iphone showing the screen going black from time to time. The guy confirmed that this is a known issue after looking in his system (although Thunderbolt is advertised to be fully compatible with the display). The only answered I got was to wait for firmware update, and that I should expect some problem when buying a new device .

Aug 8, 2011 2:54 PM in response to llg696by humming,Same thing here. 2011 mac mini with i7 and 24" LED cinema display. Black flashes all the time - whole screen goes black for 3-4 seconds, then repeats whenever it feels like it. This is completely unacceptable. I'm doing software capture now and waiting on Apple to get back with me. But after reading all of these posts, which are incredibly numerous, I think I may just return the mac mini (still within 14 day return period). I don't have any confidence that this will be fixed. Never had this problem when I was driving my 24" LED cinema display with my 2008 unibody MBP.

Aug 8, 2011 3:51 PM in response to hummingby ucruci,SAVE yourself the trouble while YOU STILL CAN. Return the Mac Mini. I've been stuck with this problem with my MacBook Pro 2011 for several months now.

Aug 9, 2011 1:34 PM in response to ucruciby BarrettF77,I am quickly becoming more frustrated with this issue. As stated above, return the Mini. I did with mine until it's resolved. The thought had also crossed my mind to return the other thunderbolt iMac too.
I completely get it, Apple likes to lead with the newest tech. And a fix that would have taken a couple months is frustrating yet understandable.
That being said, for months I have been told to wait for a firmware fix, switch hardware, or have a software capture for the engineering dept to look at. This isn't an isolated issue as it can be easily recreated and I continue to see compatibility being a gaurantee apple makes between these increasingly numerous devices.
Apple is a far cry from the service MS gives, but this is beyond the point of patience when it is messing with my work flow constantly having screens blink or flicker at random.
I truly hope they do something as I can imagine many are feeling the same as many of us.

Aug 9, 2011 1:38 PM in response to BarrettF77by DEUCE SLUICE,Has anyone else been offered a hardware swap to the 27"?
I'm not impacted too badly by the flickering - it seems to happen after the monitor has been asleep for a while then stops - but it's definitely something I want resolved. I'm not sure why you'd return a new computer vs. just eBaying the ACD and getting a Dell U2412 or the like, though.

Aug 9, 2011 1:44 PM in response to DEUCE SLUICEby BarrettF77,Deuce, I inquired about this and was told that they couldn't. However, others have stated that they have been swapped out.
As for returning, it's because I have $2,000 in these two ACDs that are perfectly fine and should work as the manufacturer has advertised. My Air and old iMac still work fine. The problem is Apple has remained mum on the subject. And why should I take a hit on Ebay and get a ugly Dell monitor. I've never owned anything from Dell that has lasted or been a good value IMHO. They are cheap because they are well... cheap.

Aug 9, 2011 1:46 PM in response to DEUCE SLUICEby Kevin Wojniak,I finally contacted our Apple Store about this and we were able to upgrade to the 27" at no extra cost (my ACD/MBP are from my employer though).

Don't bother with the Dell. I have one. Same flickering problem. The problem is not with the monitors, the problem is with the thunderbolt port on your new mac.
My Dell works fine with all my older macs that have a mini display port. It seems to be only macs that have the new combination Thunderbolt/Display port that are the problem.

Aug 9, 2011 2:07 PM in response to pgrayby DEUCE SLUICE,Well, but that'd be just over DisplayPort though, right? HDMI/DVI should be just fine...or is it?

The cable I use to connect to my 30inch Dell monitor is an Apple Dual Link DVI cable.
It has a Mini DisplayPort connection on one end for the Mac connection, and on the other end it is a DVI for the monitor. This setup still works flawlessly with all my older Macs.
If however I plug it into my 2011 Macbook Pro it blanks out frequently . Plug in old 2009 Macbook Pro, works flawlessly, change back to 2011 MB and blanks out frequently. No matter how many times I test the swap the 2009 works, the 2011 does not , so for sure the problem resides with the Mac not the monitor.
I don't have an hdmi connection on the Dell nor a cable for thunderbolt to hdmi so I can't comment on whether that would work or not.

Aug 9, 2011 3:37 PM in response to pgrayby DEUCE SLUICE,Gotcha - you're still using the Thunderbolt port. I was curious about whether it still manifests itself using the HDMI port on the mini, either to HDMI or using an HDMI->DVI adapter. I assume it would not.
So basically the *only* displayport monitors that work with the Thunderbolt macs are the 27" ACD and the 27" Thunderbolt display? That is garbage.
-
Aug 9, 2011 3:45 PM in response to DEUCE SLUICEby humming,It sure is garbage. The 24" ACD is evidently the ******* child and/or red-headed step-child of the bunch. I thought I would give my Mac Mini one more chance tonight, but I am just over this. Been using it for only 1.5 hours this evening and already it has flashed black 11 times with some squiggly side stuff as well. Ridiculous for hardware of this expense and caliber, in my humble opinion. And so disruptive and cheap feeling - that is really more the point. Going to revert back to 15" MBP unibody (2008, 2.8 core 2 duo) to drive my 24" ACD. At least until a real fix comes through, if ever. Or until I decide to bite the bullet and get rid of my 24" ACD for maybe an iMac.

Aug 9, 2011 7:15 PM in response to BarrettF77by williamfromandover,@pgray, sorry, I can't agree with you that it is the thunderbolt port. My several year old Mac Pro quad core xeon doesn't have Thunderbolt. It can flash the 24" display with the best of them, though. The problem started immediately after a recent OS update. Bummer about the Dell doing it, too! I have a 24" ACD and an old 17" Mitsubishi plugged in all the time. One drives me nuckinfutz with flashing, sometimes every couple of seconds, the Mitsubishi has never hiccupped, ever.
The part that really bums me out is that I KNOW that they know about the problem. The problem is not in the hardware - it is in some combination of firmware and driver. Their stance to make us jump through hoops to distract us is starting to tick me off. Shame on you, Apple. Man up!
I think I will revert my OS back to 10.5.7, the version that was stable with this display, and just take my chances with the vulnerabilities.
Shame... such a beautiful display!

Aug 9, 2011 8:52 PM in response to williamfromandoverby BarrettF77,William, the Mac pros are so different in that they differ from the rest of the mac lineup and have user replaceable components such as videocards where most of apple's lineup doesn't allow for this. Plus, it's also a server based computer and all of apple's hardware otherwise is desktop grade.
I think we're comparing apple's to oranges.

Aug 9, 2011 9:30 PM in response to BarrettF77by MortgageGod,Guys, Call tech support, there is a firmware patch for the 24" ACD, ask about it. You have to go thru some steps, but, it seems to be working. Mine would go black for about .5 second then reappear, now it seems fine.
