Aug 10, 2011 5:54 AM in response to caleixoby MortgageGod,Caleixo,
Step 1 call tech support ask about the new/beta firmware for the 24" ACD.
Step 2 Apple will send you the apple confidential agreement
Step 3 read, sign and return said Apple confidential agreement
Step 4 Apple will send you the Apple confidential firmware .dmg
Step 5 Install said firmware with directions sent from apple rep
Step 6 enjoy flicker free 24" ACD!
Unfortunately, due to the confidential agreement I signed, I can't disclose more that that. Just call Apple and ask them about the new/beta ACD Firmware. I did get transfered/upgraded to 3 techs, and was sent this firmware by a 4th apple Tech. The entire process did take a few phone calls. However, I only had to make the initial call, Apple initiated the rest. I Started early on Monday, and finished midday on Tuesday.

Aug 10, 2011 11:07 AM in response to MortgageGodby caleixo,I call them and they told me to check on software update... that they have no beta firware. I'm just fed up with all this flickering every morning.

Aug 10, 2011 11:09 AM in response to caleixoby DEUCE SLUICE,Same deal, but I at least got the 2nd person I talked to to take a software capture and send it on to engineering. She did say they were collecting serial numbers of affected displays.

Aug 10, 2011 11:24 AM in response to DEUCE SLUICEby MortgageGod,Wow, that's incredible, I don't know what to tell you guys, it was not that difficult for me, the first guy got me to reset the PRAM, then passed me to another guy, who said there was nothing he could do, other than escallate the issue (it did tell him i wanted them to replace the 24" afflicted ACD with a 27" one (i have apple care).
He said he would have someone call me back, the next day they did, sent me the documents to sign, once signed, another tech sent me the file to upload the new firmware into my 24" ACD.
All there was to it. Now everything works, no black screens!
Maybe you need to escallate the issue

Aug 10, 2011 11:31 AM in response to MortgageGodby sciencegal, sorry to say, but yes, it took escallating the issue to get them to replace my 24" ACD

Aug 10, 2011 12:56 PM in response to MortgageGodby BarrettF77,I have spoken to numerous people at apple over this. They insisted there is no firmware fix. I'm simply going to insist upon replacement thunderbolt displays once available.
The shoot first and ask questions later policy is growing tiresome. I'm sure the new displays will be compatible because what that's the only thing at this point after having waited that makes sense.

Aug 10, 2011 5:01 PM in response to MortgageGodby ptaylor874,I contacted someone at AppleCare today after reading your post and they stated that if a beta firmware existed, it would be available through the Mac Developer program, of which I'm already a member. I checked the Mac Dev program and don't see it there.
Of course, I've heard so many different stories from this forum, and they seem to conflict with what Apple tells me when I call, so I'm not sure what to believe.

Aug 10, 2011 6:20 PM in response to DanRybby Humanfly,Got the same problem (ACD 24" with MBP 2011). Here's what I think:
- The story about a beta firmware that you only get signing and agreement sounds a bit strange. Being an Apple user for many years, I've never heard of anything like that (especially if it's not available in the Mac Dev program either). I'm sorry MortgageGod but I'll take that story with a bit of caution. Would it be possible to ask you to send that file via email (can you do PM in these forums?).
- Called Apple (I've got Apple care for the ACD) and asked for a hardware replacement and they said they don't have that program in Australia (?). That is a US only program. That sounds like a bit of nonsense to me. The lady I spoke to (after upgraded to 2 techs) said that she'll send the info to the engineers and I should hear back in the next week or so but they have no knowledge of a beta firmware at this point.
- 532 posts in the forum, this is obviously something Apple is aware of. Question is if they'd bother on finding a solution.
My suggestion would be: If you have an Apple store close by, make an appointment, take your ACD and MBP (I know, what a pain!) and if possible, have some footage of the screen issues (film with a camera or use a software to capure your screen). Make sure you take as much evidence as possible and a link to this thread. Don't leave the Apple store until they take your screen or they give you a replacement.
We've paid big bucks for these products (including the pricy Apple care), so we deserve to have things working as they should and not having to spend hours looking at this forums for solutions. We're not buying Acer or Dell.

Aug 10, 2011 6:23 PM in response to ptaylor874by DEUCE SLUICE,I got a callback from AppleCare this evening. No beta firmware exists to give to customers according to their engineers, but she said they are aware of the issue and a firmware update is coming soon.
Since this is a known issue there's no way I'm taking my rig down to the Apple Store. No one there is in a position to do anything about it at this point.

Aug 10, 2011 6:30 PM in response to BarrettF77by williamfromandover,@BarrettF77, yes, I know they are different. The fact that they are so different, and we all have the same problem, tells me that it is something other than the video card. The fact that I have two displays plugged into my video card, and only the ACD blinks, supports this. The fact that mine was flicker free for a year before an OS upgrade, and it then started flickering a LOT, tells me that it might not be the display, either. Thanks for helping make my point.

Aug 10, 2011 10:09 PM in response to DanRybby Humanfly,I understand not wanting to take your gear to the Apple store, but I'm not confident this will be fixed anytime soon (if ever). It's been almost 6 months since this discussion started and Apple has done nothing yet. And to be honest, there's no evidence this will be fixed in the next few weeks (apart form an unofficial anouncement of a 'firmware update coming soon'). I'd LOVE to be proven wrong though but realistically I don't see than happening soon.

Aug 11, 2011 3:03 AM in response to Humanflyby NicoNB,It is getting more fussier every week.
In another discussion people have problems with there new MBA with Thunderbolt port with the same problems, others have the same set-up but report no problems at all.
To me that raises the following questions; are all these ACD's built by the same manufacturer, do all displays have the same electronics inside or is it maybe the panel and panel controller that differs?
Anyone any idea if Apple made ACD's with the same electronics and panels? Or did they use different suppliers. Is there a combination of components that was produced since late 2008 that is causing all these problems?

What do I have to gain by lying? Seriously?!?
I am sorry you guys seem to be having trouble getting apple to cooperate, what can I say, I must be better at it than you.
Maybe you are calling to/from a different country, that could have something to do with it, I am in the US.
I can't share the file with you, due to the confidentiality issue. I have emailed the person that sent it to me, asking why it is so secret, suffice it to know it works. My monitor is now flicker free.
