Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I am afraid I am the same.

I bought a 17" i7 MBP last week, bought it to my desk, plugged it in and am now getting this black flashing and weird vertical and horizontal shifts.

[edit: I unplugged and re-plugged it and it seems to have sorted itself out. Time will tell]

My 2011 MBP + 24" ACD is doing the same thing:  it randomly blanks out for a second and then comes back.  This can happen 1 to 10 times per hour.  I called Apple a month ago and the tech said a software fix is coming out soon.  20 days later my ticket was closed and consider fixed.  I called again to re-open the ticket and the answer was "A fix is coming out soon".

I am very disappointed in the way Apple is handling this and will never purchase an Apple Cinema Display again.

I opened an AppleCare case yesterday and the two agents I spoke to had not heard of any software fix coming. They said the only thing to do would be to drag my 2011 15" MBP and 24" ACD to an apple store. Problem is I'm in Panama and I dont think the stores don't have geniuses. The agent suggested i bring the sisplay back with me to a store ob the US.  Yeah right.  Not a happy camper. Now every person the asks about my monitor in an admiring manner will be told: "it works great, just not on apple's new computers".

Question:  has anyone noticed if this problem only occurs in clamshell mode?

Wow, im still suprised Apple hasnt resolved this issue yet with a software fix. I had this problem back in April and luckily then, Apple was replacing all 24" ACD that had Applecare with an upgraded 27" ACD, either for free or by charging the difference ($100). I luckily got mine upgraded for free, and has been working flawlessly since.

Looks like anyone that's just gettin in the boat are $hit outta luck until a software update is released. Just some advice, dont bother calling Apple, they wont do anything, just ride it out and wait for a fix. I've been following the forum for the last 2-3 months and it looks like nobody has gotten any free upgrades/refunds/credits/incentives since May. I would just keep keep your software up to date, dont waste time with Applecare, i say that because i had 2 of these and the 2nd one i got nowhere with it and just quit and sold it on eBay.

Selling the screen is not a solution if you have an 'older' Mac that still has a displayport (in my case a MBP).

Yes I know I can buy a 27" ACD with displayport, but I bought an iMac with Thunderbolt port, so why should I have to make a concession here. Apple told all of us that displayport and Thunderbolt are compatible when it comes to display signals. It is clear that Apple has made a mistake by communicating compatibility while it is clear there are quite a few people with different types of hardware who have compatibility problems.

For me the best solution is to keep my 24" ACD (for my 'old' MBP) and buy a second screen, a 27" ACD with TB port for my 2011 iMac.

I have the same issue, MBP 15'' early 2011 and a 24'' LED Cinema, it goes black every 5 minutes or less... really frustrating... Apple just told me they are aware of the issue and they will fix it with a software update...

The same screen works perfectly with an old 13'' MBP.

Does anyone else notice the problem insists mostly (if not exclusively) while in clamshell mode?

Then again, how would that account for the people with i.e. 2011 iMacs and 24 inch ACDs…

    I'm on a 2011 MBP 13 inch and 24 inch ACD.

LATEST REPLY from my case administrator (Apple Senior Advisor at apple.com) says on August 23rd 2011 (translated roughly):

"I'm sorry to inform you I have no answer yet on the problem between 24 inch ACDs and 13 inch 2011 MBPs. We've had several reports and are looking into the problem. On behalf of the fact that Apple has not been able to give a technical explanation for the problem, I cannot promise you a solution or offer you a time frame of when the problem will be solved."

What to think of this, half a year down the road…

Does anyone notice any activity that makes the screen flicker sooner?  Certain things seem to agitate it sooner.  I have this same problem - it consistently starts after about a half hour of usage.  The screen flickers and becomes distorted for about an hour until it just completely goes black (the only fix from there is to unplug it and plug it back in).

I have AppleCare and of course I've gotten nowhere with Apple on the phone.  I've finally had enough and am going to drag this thing into the Apple Store Genius Bar and make them replace it with one that works.  It would be nice if I didn't have to stand there for a 30 minutes going "Trust me, it's going to flicker any second now....".

Ok, here is the newest scoop on my ACD "problems" when it is connected to my 2011 13 inch MBP. I have called Apple Care numerous times without any success. I made an appointment with one of the Apple "Geniuses" at my local Apple Store. As you can imagine, they ran all sorts of tests on my MBP and the 24 inch ACD. Everything was fine and they weren't able to recreate the problem. Needless to say, the problem still exists. In my opinion Apple is in total denial that this problem exists. I have spent a fortune on Apple products and I am very dissappointed in how they handle this problem. Does anyone know of a class action law suit regarding this issue?
I consider seeking legal advise regarding this matter. What are your thoughts regarding this issue?

That is totally uneceptable if you ask me. I have been an Apple fan before all these bandwagon fans jumped on the train. Apple got too big way to fast. They don't care about their core clientele anymore.

I'm pretty sure apple are working their nuts off to resolve the problem. The above comments are likely to be removed by mods.

I have been in touch with a senior apple tech who was very frank in saying that it is a thunderbolt firmware problem which affects the iMac and MacBook Pros. He said that there will be a fix in 10.7.2.

My sister bought a 21.5" iMac the other day and has exactly the same problem with her 24" ACD.

I'm sure that the product cycle dictated that there are a lot of original 24" ACD owners who are now Upgrading their machines, so the number of complaints is going to rise rapidly.

Wait for 10.7.2 then if it isn't fixed, then tack farther action.

    @Jason W-D

"The above comments are likely to be removed by mods."

Why would the above comment be removed? Because freedom of speech is not applicable when it comes to complaints about bad Apple products and bad Apple service?

I do not know if people are working their nuts off, I only now that Apple has enough reserve funds to hire techs to fix this problem. A problem that exists since Feb 2011 and still needs to be solved.

I have to agree with Thorsten, it seems Aplle has become to big to handle complaints from customers.

If the work allows me, a call takes  about 20-30 minutes, I will give Apple a call and see what they come up with this time.

I don't really want to make any blanket statements about Apple.

But I do find it odd that I can't find this issue acknowledged on the website anywhere?  Some Apple support staff acknowledge that it's an issue over the phone, but not all.  Does anyone know if there's a support page on the website that specifically lists this problem?  It would save a lot of trouble when talking to a CSR.

Just in case anyone is wondering what we (well.. me in any case) is talking about...

This video shows both the 'tearing' or 'glitch' and the first black screen of the day.
