Problem Do A Clean Install on my Macbook Pro

I have a lot of stuff on my macbook pro that i dont need and wanted to do a clean restore of my laptop, i put in the Mac DVD of the operating system and it states that the computer is going to restart the computer and enter into "Disk Utility" the computer restarts then it comes up with the grey screen with the apple symbol and it basically freezes on the screen, the loading circle below the apple symbol doesnt come up at all and it wont move on, i waited for over 4 hours and it stayed on the grey screen, i then tried the method again, and again it stalls on the grey screen with the apple symbol.

Is there anything i can do to fix this as I want a clean uninstall with only the original programs on my laptop
