2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive noise.

Hi all.
Just bought a new Macbook Pro and started to make some Hard Drive noise. Like is working (write/read data).
Especially if you open some softwares, like CS5, Nero,...

I have a old 2009 Macbook Pro and never have this kind of sound (or is not so strong). Is very quiet.
My wife have a 13' Macbook Pro and the noise/sound is very low. But with the new 2011 is more prominent.

This is normal? Something to do with the new processors?

Anyone have the same experience?

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I'm having the same issue with my new 15inch MBP. I noticed within minutes that there was something wrong with the noise, certainly not what I expect from such an expensive machine. It's also dissapointing that this machines are designed to make this level of noise, even when idle.

It's a pitty but I'll probably return this MBP for a refund :-(

Same issue with mine. I just opened my MacBook 15" 2.2Ghz Quad Core i7 and I noticed the weird sound. First I though it was the fan. I'm not used to the sound because I also have a 13" 2.7Ghz Core i7 and it's definately not as loud. Much quieter. My 15" has a TOSHIBA MK7559GSX 750GB. My 13" has a Hitachi 500GB.

This is very annoying and when you put pressure on the bottom right corner, the noise goes away. What's frustrating is I took it to the Apple Genuis Bar, and they said it's perfectly fine.

Apple should recall all the Toshiba HDDs

I mean this thing cost $2400 and it's loud as h.. What a shame Apple.

I think here are enough reports of loud hdds and no respons of an apple official. They should think about the handling of this annoying hdd noise.

In my macbook pro 15´ 2011 it is definitly the hdd, I tried another hdd, without any positiv result. I think it is an construction error of the new Macbook early 2011. My old 13´ ist nearly unhearable!

Its a shame to sell an 2000 € Macbook and let the coustomers alone with a noisy machine, that make me angry eyery time i use it.

Also, I forgot to mention that besides the noise issue, the MBP 15" 2.2ghz 2011 also OVERHEATS. When I surf the web for like 5-10 min and browse iPhoto, the MacBook Pro just gets HOT.. And i mean extremely hot. One time I was browsing iPhoto and the fan just kicked in like I was rendering a bunch of video when I was only looking at pix and had only iPhoto open. I never remember my 13" i7 doing that. The fan never kicked in when I was only browsing iPhoto and had 1 app open. If I touch the upper part above the keyboard on my 15", i can almost burn my fingers. And if I touch the bottom of the MacBook Pro, it's crazy hot.. Extremely hot. I mean my 13" i7 NEVER came anything close to that kind of heat. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. Like seriously. I Googled this issue and it seems like a bunch of people are expierancing this as well on the 2.2ghz MBP.

BEWARE, DO NOT buy the MBP 15" i7 quad. It has a bunch of problems like annoying HDD noise, and extremely overheats! You have been warned. Replacements do not fix the issue, all of them are like this. Genius bar won't do anything except accept a return. (until Apple fixes this ongoing crap which will take half a year)

Apple seriously screwed up with this model. Shame. $2400 for something w/ a bunch of problems?

Apple will be willing to fix this? So what? They couldn't have investigated these issues before releasing the laptops? Wow.

I've seen several MacBook Pro's that have this hard disk noise (various models and sizes from the 2008 models right up to and including the new 2011 models). It's typically called "seek noise" and is more noticeable if you're in a quieter room, nothing to be overly concerned about.

You could have two identical hard disks sitting side by side with different noise characteristics as well, every hard disk is different. Some are simply more quieter than others.

Hi,

the clinking/clicking nois is beacuse the hard drive is not registered;

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

That should fix it, if it didn't try it again and if no luck then there is a fault with your hard drive.

Good luck

Has anyone tried to add some insulation between the hard disk and the aluminum case?

The hard drive does make a fan-like noise when running, I have tried runing it outside the MBP and it sounds almost as loud. The problem here seems to be that the thin aluminum is not able to dampen the noise. For example I didn't have this problem with my old 2007 Macbook because the case is thicker and more solid.

I have been trying to find a suitable dampening material but I haven't had any luck. There is very little space and would have to use a dense material such as lead. Also it would not be good for the dampening material to apply pressure to the hard disk, it could damage it.

I'm returning mine today and will be watching this thread just in case someone finds a solution.
