Thunderbolt port to mini DisplayPort cable to Dell U2410 - grainy display

Minutes ago, I finished setting up my new Quad i7 2.0 15" MacBook Pro. As soon as I connected it to my external display, I noticed the display is showing up very graining, like it was connected over VGA or something. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. I also have a mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor that I want to try.

EDIT: a hour ago I had everything hooked up to my i5 unibody MBP and working fine. So I guess the new Thunderbolt port has a problem with cable.

I connected to the monitor using my Apple mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor and a DVI cable and it's fine now. I'll have to find a better mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable tho (Apple certainly doesn't make one).

I am not sure if I am having the exact problem as stefanodruetta but I suspect it is. I can vouch that it is not specific to Thunderbolt because I have experienced the same issue with an older Mac mini (mid-2010, version 4,1). It seems to have become a problem after Tiger (I found other forums stating the same).

The display to the HP LP2475w, any diagonal or curved lines appears very jagged, so it is very hard to read text. I am not sure if it is just unaliased or if it is overscanning. After much testing I finally got it to display correctly using an Apple mini-DP to DVI adapter (my first one didn't work at all and turned out to be defective). I've also found many threads about font smoothing, but I have found that forcing it on via Terminal command has no affect on my setup (Mac mini 2010 or 2011 with the HP LP2475w

I will try to take photos soon, hopefully within the next couple days. (I mentioned earlier, I had tried using Grab to capture a screen shots to compare, but all of them turned out the same).

so early this morning i went to the apple store with my macs and the hp monitor, set up the whole thing and showed the problem to a genius who was really looking forward to solve my problem and test any possible combination [he seemed a bit confused between HDMI and DP though... 😀 ], in the end he and his supervisor could realize what the issue was, BUT kept on saying that since the problem relates to a non-apple product, they can't do anything to fix it. the choiches they gave were either buy the adapter, buy the cinema display, or return the macbookpro, since it doesn't match my expectations. WHAT!? YOU tell me that thunderbolt retrofits displayport and then it doesn't happen, and the problem is my expectation!? don't fool me.

they wouldn't even think of letting me have the adapter for free or borrowed till a software fix comes out. they said, and this has been repeated by the apple care later, if the problem is an adapter, buy it! they're fooling me. and anybody else is facing these issues.

so i bought the adapter coz i couldn't waist more time: fortunately the single link was more than enough [we tested the dual link and it caused further problems.. no way..].

BUT, i'll be asking a "consumer's association" [i hope you get it.. i don't know the right words..] how to proceed on a legal basis. this ain't over.

bye! 🙂

Thanks for your continued posts and follow-up! (I been searching around for a lot of threads, a lot of them people just give up).

Just wanted to check with you, have you tried Boot Camp yet? I am going to give it a try as soon as I have some time, because I'm almost certain it is a software issue (aka bug) in Mac OS, starting with 10.5 Leopard. I remember it was working fine on the first Mac mini I had, running 10.4 Tiger.

i don't 😀 i'm a problem solver by nature, or i'm just a stubborn customer who wants what is paid for, right? 😉

please let's not touch the boot camp argument... i spent yesterday morning trying to install win7 with no succes, and furthermore i had my mac stuck with other filesystem issues.. it seems that the copy I have [business version, multi licence, from an ICT company.. long story 😀 ] has some problems.. i don't know.

i used it since the very beginning with tiger, and i had more than a bit of pain with it. it's better to use parallel desktop, as i've been told..

good luck!

hi there 🙂

i'm realizing that the mdp-dvi solution can affect colour accuracy, and as you can see in the OSD, "image control" menu is not available, as it is over mdp-dp cable. furthermore, it happens that even if you profiled your monitor with a colorimeter such as x-rite or spyder3, mac won't load it as you hook it up.. i.e. i'm having frustrating issues on this side, and i bought this monitor for its great colour capabilities..

my question today: does anybody tested OS 10.7.4? i upgraded my macbookpro and i'll be testing it lately...

what is that the OSD controls? I noticed its greyed out on mine as well.... something to do with the DVI connection.

what is the issue with loading up the profile? I havent noticed on mine, I used colormunki and seem to have had a good calibration of my screen, I have done 2 different profiles for different times of the day/night. Havent noticed the issue with loading the profile, but then again, computer is always on and connected.

On a bad news note. I noticed my display suffers from the green-to-magenta (left-to- right) hue variation issue. I had read some displays were affected by this (bad luck, I guess) anyhow, I have contacted the place I bought it from and should get it replaced.

its a bit of a shame, I was really happy wth this monitor.

how is everyone getting along with their display? anybody notice the infamous green to magenta hue shift occuring on the corners of the screen?

I have sent my first display back and got a replacement, it has the same issue... 😠

I wonder If I might get lucky on the third or not.

I am afraid a step up from this display might cost twice as much 😮

Just posting to say that I had a similar experience with my retina MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a Dell U2410. The solution was to adjust the monitor's sharpness setting. With Apple's mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter it is looks best at a sharpness setting of 40-50 (50 is the default). With a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, it looks horribly grainy at the default sharpness setting. Decreacing the sharpness to 0 gave the best result, though honestly, I think it might look better if it were less sharp still.

The other thing that was interesting is that the monitor seemed to have trouble holding on to the sharpness setting. I turned the monitor off an on and when it came back, it looked grainy again. When I checked the sharpness setting, it said it was set to 0, but when I had to bump it up and take it back down again to make it take again.
