A lot of characters missing from "Character Viewer" .. can I get them?
Other categories too...
Could I've erased them? With CleanMyMac maybe?

how do I install those extra you mention?
I don't have that Folder, only "FontCollections"?
ok I installed a couple of fonts that now appear in Font Book, but nowhere in the Character Viewer
But there is no View choice in the Lion version of Character Viewer. Thus one cannot select Glyph, which was previously possible in earlier versions of the OS. If it is possible, it is hidden, and the secret has not been openly revealed. There is no documentation for these things, unless one wishes to wade fruitlessly through thousands of technical notes.
Oh come, oh come, a manual!

This forum is for 10.6, not 10.7.
It is well known that 10.7 Character Viewer does not have View=Glyph, there is nothing hidden or secret about it and no way for you to find it somewhere. You can use PopChar or copy the Character Viewer app from 10.6 to your 10.7 machine and run it as an independent app.
Thank you, Tom, for clearing this up.
So this means that one must buy a third-party software, or port the old Character Viewer from an earlier version of the OS, hoping that it will still work? How is that helpful? What does Apple have on its mind?
[I am restraining myself from further comment, except to note that software designers don't seem to understand users, and users certaintly don't understand software-designers.]

Yes. Nobody here knows why Apple went this route, but you can tell them how you feel about it at
Character Viewer isn't doing what I want it to do, can somebody help me?
Here's the issue: I have a font installed called Anastasia, which contains musical symbols. I would like to be able to bring up its whole character set on the screen so I can pick which character to insert in my document. It seems to me that this is what Character Viewer is intended to do; however, I can find no way to view the character set for this particular font, Anastasia. The "Muscial Symbols" collection brings up a limited set of symbols, such as notes, but it's an incomplete set and it does not show Anastasia as one of the available font variations. This font is definitely installed and at least one of my installed apps uses it routinely. But it doesn't seem to be accessible through Character Viewer. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!

In Lion Character Viewer has lost the ability to view/input characters from non-Unicode fonts like that, which map special characters to codepoints reserved for Latin. You need to use PopChar or grab the Character Viewer from 10.6, which you can run in 10.7 as an independent app.
An alternative is to add Unicode music fonts, such as Euterpe or Musical Symbols, as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Thanks Tom. Unfortunately PopChar keeps crashing so I can't use it. Any tips as to how I get my hands on the charcater viewer from 10.6?
If you don't have access to 10.6, email me and I will see if there is any way to help. tom at bluesky dot org
