TRIM Support in Mac SSD

I am about to purchase my first Mac and Im so excited. But before I do I have a question about the SSD. I was not planning on buying the SSD, but instead just going to some 7200RPM HDD but realized the price was only an additional $90, a price you can not just go out and buy one at.

My only concern is the lack of TRIM in Mac OSX. Now, their is speculation (and partial proof) that Lion will have TRIM support, but from what I have researched TRIM is also a hardware variable and not just software. Does anyone know if the new MacBook Pro's SSDs offer TRIM support? Also, will my SSD, by Summer hopefully, be negatively effected by the few months of the lack of TRIM?

Thank you so much,

Ben

Lex, have I got my ^above^ point # (4) wrong then?

(4) In 10.7.x Lion, TRIM will (almost certainly) be supported natively by Apple for other non-Apple SSD manufacturers that support it on their ranges of SSD drives.

So all users buying a third-party supplied SSD, will have to do that patch?

If so, why is this the case; have Apple done this for commercial or technical reasons (eg. it's perhaps difficult to enable this function after it's left the factory, so Apple have no way of giving users an "easy" way to enable it, resulting in these third-party work-arounds)?

...just curious. 😐

Jim, I do not know about Lion. We'll see. If Trim is not natively supported in Lion, I wait to upgrade until the real professors have tested the Trim hack.

I have no comment on why Apple does it's things like they do.

To all: snow leopard Trim Hack works well with Trim Enabler 1.1 and (just released) 1.2. I tested both on 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 , no sweat. Good luck.

If I am not mistaken OsX Lion is an upgrade not a patch.

Rather obviously I did NOT say Lion is the patch, but the third-party Trim Enabler is! Do not misquote me please.

I can find nothing on the apple website but everyone from zdnet to apple insider is saying Os X Lion will have trim Support.

As for those crap links, they are completely not relevant to this conversation.

Firstly, they are all completely out of date (from circa Feb. 2011). Secondly, they all confirm exactly what we already know —all Apple supplied SSD's are supported, as they already are in latest updates to Snow Leopard— but completely fail to answer the question we are all asking: are NON-Apple supplied SSD's supported natively by Apple (ie. without using the third-party Trim Enabler).

I suggest you read things properly before making yourself sound rather stupid because you didn't read either my post properly, nor the important article detail properly!
