iDVD won't open

Hey,

I really need help with this as soon as possible.
So when I go to open iDVD it just bounces then stops and won't open no warning message or anything.
I've already tried deleting the 1,2,4 theme files and that did not work.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
-JB

Hi

I would try to start iDVD - BUT this time keep alt-key down during upstart and start a
new iDVD project.

I just ran into a similar condition - and in my case I hade some external hard disks
connected when setting up an iDVD project.
Next time I tried to open this iDVD project - the external hard disks was not connected
(no one of them was engaged in the iDVD project - at all)
still iDVD didn't start-up so something makes it notice a change of environment.

Connecting external drives and re-Start and iDVD came up again.

Starting with alt-key down also made iDVD to come up - but I had to start a new project
old one locked up (as long as ext HDs was disconnected)

See if You find help here.

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*

• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try

iDVD pref file resides.

Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences

and is named.
com.apple.iDVD.plist

While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.

• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb

• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple’s Disk Utilities application)

• Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK will work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iDVD’09 v. 7.0.4, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (does work under Leopard)

• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz

or

Macintosh HD/Users/Your log-in//Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz

• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player

iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

iDVD updated ?

Apple Codec updated ?

Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets

No of Colors - must be set to millions

EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

Had same problem. After a hard drive failure and replacement by Apple, then Time Machine restore, iDVD gave degrading performance and finally wouldn't even open. Tried disk repair, repair permissions, deleting idvdplist in Preferences, deleting Themes. All didn't work with several restarts thrown in for good measure. Threw iDVD in trash, emptied and restored from original disk. Still wouldn't open. In reading about total files delete, decided to search for ALL iDvd files. Only files left were .dvdproj files. Deleted all my old projects, restarted computer and voila'. iDvd now runs like new. Show no issues at all so far. Just did new project. Sigh of relief. Noticed before total delete that iDVD would run in different account that had no projects yet. Hope this works for everyone with iDVD problems. Luckily didn't need old projects, and it freed quite a bit of space.
