Macbook pro stuck on start up screen

My macbook pro bought mid last year, suddenly wont turn on. It gets to the white screen with the grey apple and a rotating spiral beneath that. i left it to do that for about 3 days and still nothing happened. help me please 🙂

Power it down by pressing the power key and holding it down until the MBP shuts off. Then see if it will power up in safe mode (hold down shift key until you see the spinning cog). If you still have problems, while it is on insert your OS installer disk, power down and then power up while holding down the 'c' key. Post back.

i tried to start it in safe mode by holding down shift but nothing happened. i did try the command - v to see the verbose mode menu and it did list that something was wrong with the HD drive so i might just take it to the apple store.

Hello Sig, I'm having the same problem and I have completed both suggestions...I have booted from the install cd. What should I do next? I'm currently repairing permissions while I'm waiting...

I've been unsuccessful trying to zap the pram, boot in safe mode...etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I had this problem and it worked for me!!!

So switch the mac off, then switch it back on again but as soon as you have switched it on hold down the Apple cmd button + S, untill the booting screen comes up.

Once that has loaded

type:

/sbin/mount -uw /

then type:

chmod 775 /

then type:

exit

this re-boots the mac. should work and I didn't lose anything!!!

Hey Chickenstew,

I tries your method but none of the commands seem to work. Simply nothing happens. Could you go through the steps in more detail (e.g. Do you press enter after typing each line? Or is there really a space in the command /sbin/mount -uw/ ?). I'm not that tech savy I need clear direction. Thanks.

Thank you, Chickenstew! Your solution worked!

Apparently the problem is that some permissions get screwed up if the Macbook isn't shut down properly. These commands fix the permissions.
