Power Cable Problems

I recently started noticing power cable issues where my machine would not charge and when it would charge the machine would power off completely and then when powered up the battery would not display and the only way to solve this was if I reset the SMC. The computer works completely fine on battery with no problems, could all the power issues be down to a faulty cable?

Suppose I will need to buy a new cable.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

If you have access to an Apple Store, make an appointment at the genius bar and have them take a look. You can try out a known good power adaptor and see if the problem disappears. Your Mac should still be under the 1 year warranty period, so it's worth a trip to the Apple Store to get a diagnosis of what's going on. It may be that you have a faulty power adaptor, and if so, they may replace it for you. It's also possible that the power port or power board on your Mac is bad or something like that, and if so, you want to get that fixed while still under warranty.

Good luck!
