AVI Files on my iMac have no sound

After re installing the installation disc on my iMac, I have now discovered any AVI movie files played on my iMac have no sound (Mute). The same AVI file transfered to my Macbook Pro is all OK & has sound. I have converted AVI to m4v through Handbrake & then it's OK, but is there samething I can do to make AVI with sound on my iMac ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

AVI is a Windows format so you will need to download and install VLC Media Player. You can download a copy here.

Hi Roger,
Yes I know I can get an AVI movie to play with audio in VLC, but why am I able to play the file with audio on my Macbook Pro & on my Imac B/4 without using VLC ? It just puzzles me.
