Mar 23, 2011 12:23 PM in response to Phil3345by uniacid,I seem to be having issues still also on my new Macbook Pro,
I first thought it was the HD (I swapped it out so I might swap it back later with a fresh install)
but then I noticed issues with random crashes and I think it has something to do with the GPU switching back and forth when needed... I did upgrade to 10.6.7 yesterday and still had the issue, but today thankfully I found gfxCardStatus which can set which video card to use.
So far using it in discrete mode (ATI only) and no crashes so far, and I also tried running 8 "yes" instances as well, I'm still testing this out so I will let you know if I do see anything else but hopefully Apple does fix this for good as it seems a widespread prevalent problem for people and worse for non-technical people who can at least diagnose and solve the problem. -
Mar 23, 2011 1:37 PM in response to Rensoomby XenoRising,Okay I am gonna give more detail in to what its doing for me.. since the more info people have the faster it can be solved.
The issue is better now with the patch however...
I've tryed running secound life and when I do I had it going fine but it kepted crashing... about 19 times after about 8 mins using it.. however the 20th time it locked up like it has before where you hear things but you can't do anything but move the mouse around... This also happen with rift... using crossover it did it way quicker though about 4 mins with it up..
The fan them selves seem to be doing fine my system is running about 40 to 60 degress and it has istats I can say that the patch did help the issue some but it is not solved..
However did run the game trine for over 12 hours left it running all night and didn't crash or lock up.. I am starting to think its related to some opengl or some files that some programs use at some points of running... -

It may have worked for you but if you read this thread properly it has not worked for some and has only partially helped with others so how can you state categorically that it has fixed the problem? -
Mar 23, 2011 2:46 PM in response to oogieby shishlik,1.Is this a driver or hardware problem??????
2.Will it be fixed????
3.When?????

Mar 23, 2011 3:30 PM in response to shishlikby SimonPickard,Arhhhh!!!!This thread is becoming a joke. Please READ before posting!

DRIVER
2.Will it be fixed????
*IT HAS BEEN FIXED!*
3.When?????
*TWO DAYS AGO!*
If you're having other issues with your macbook pro after the software update I'm guessing you have a faulty macbook pro. But it isn't related to the issue dealt with in this thread. -

Every SINGLE 15/17 inch macbook pro 2011 that i tested or know of had the issue prior to 10.6.7
Every single one i've tested has been fixed since 10.6.7.
Huge numbers of people who have this issue have had it fixed. A few people saying it's not fixed is within the margin for error. I believe the few people who are claiming it hasn't been fixed have a different but similar issue.
Many i've read have been using after market parts. Many have been using software known to crash on 64 bit kernels, and a few had a more serious problem.
If you are one of the VERY few people who it didn't fix it for, please return it for a replacement or refund. -

I refer you to the following above who have done the upgrade and it is still not fixed or has only partially helped:

You may be happy that it has fixed the problem for you but there are still a lot of disgruntled people out there that it has not fixed the problem for
This is sufficient for me to stop me buying right now
I will wait for the replacement -
Mar 23, 2011 4:32 PM in response to Rensoomby mibrooks,Same deal, here. I bought a new 17" MacBook Pro on Monday, created a 225 GB partition for Windows 7 and installed the 64 bit OEM version. Whenever, and mean whenever, doing an update, Windows freezes when rebooting... usually when exiting. All you see is the Microsoft screen and a little whirling ball. You have to do a hardware shutdown (hold the power button down until the machine powers down) and that crashes Windows! Worst of all, I am a developer! I need the big Windows partition becasue I am doing database and web site development using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL. -
Mar 23, 2011 4:47 PM in response to Rensoomby XenoRising,What do you think all every one seems to be saying that even returning it hasnt had a driffents to the whole freezeing the os but not the mouse or sound issue..
I know the latest patch was said to fix it.. but it hasnt for so many...
Shall i take the time to have it replaced if so do they send one out and you then send it back or what?
I have no apple store near me unless you call bestbuy one... coughs.
Or shall I wait for a fix... I still think its driver related due to windows 7 working fine.. -
Mar 23, 2011 5:04 PM in response to iFrodoby soulty,Yes your right, with hot corners I put the display to sleep, then while in sleep after a period of time puts the computer to sleep. -

edit: sorry for multiple post, I wasn't sure on how to reply to multiple people.

Mar 23, 2011 5:27 PM in response to oogieby John Harrold,I've been following this fairly closely. You list a lot of folks there, and I can tell you about one I have been in direct contact with (Horniasty). He did have the freezing problem. That is what this thread is about. After applying the patch, it fixed the freezing problem. He also had a bunch of other issues that were not fixed. *This is not relevant to this thread.* Which is exactly what wonslung is trying to tell you folks.
If you have applied the patch and your computer still freezes in response to the tests shown here (and in the same manner): mbp-freeze.wikispaces.com then it didn't solve your problem. If you applied the patch and you still have horizontal lines going across the screen (as was one of the problems Horniasty still had) then it doesn't really matter because that was not the problem we were discussing here. -

I suggest you take your own advice. Read the forum at macrumors.
I also suggest this to you:
Prior to this update, i went to the apple store and was able to make this crash happen on EVERY single macbook pro.
After the update, i did the same thing (earlier today) and i couldn't get it to happen on ANY of them.
Many of the people you list didn't have the problem you think this thread is about or have had it fixed.
Please stop spreading disinformation.
