Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

    For what it's worth; it seems the fans on my old MBP are running faster and more often after the update.
The hottest my macbook pro gets is 87C according to monitoring tools, and much cooler to the touch.
That would explain why it's not too hot to the touch.

    Mine sometimes idles higher than 80C and when rendering, is consostently above 90C, regularly above 95C, sometimes reaching 99C.

    If I touch it, it hurts!

    heh, i believe that.. but i was basically saying that the design of the macbook seems to dissipate the heat slightly better than my other laptops. When my asus is at 80c, if i hold my hand on the bottom of it, it will burn me.. If i put it near the vent, it will seriously burn me.

    The macbook doesn't do that to me. But it seems i may be somewhat lucky with my unit...I've heard few people say they see temps of 90c + while i've yet to see that.

    --------------------

    From my reading of these forums, there are two different "groups" of machines with respect to heat.

    1) Those that idle around 40 C and when pushed to the limit max out under 90 C (I had one of these -- 85 was the highest I could push it);

    2) Those that idle higher (50-60 C) and when pushed hit high-90s or over 100 C.

    I would suggest that if yours is in the higher range that perhaps the "thermal paste" issue (whereby some machines have been shown to have excessive thermal paste applied during assembly, resulting in higher running temperatures) may be affecting yours, and Apple should be given the opportunity to delight you with their customer service...

    Best,
    Scott

    @Kirkins

    I sent in my computer because of the freezing issue in this thread. They wanted to keep my old one and replace it. The new one they sent me shipped straight from Shanghai, and it took 5 days from when the new order was placed until it got here. If you send it in they will either repair it or send you a new one.

    I cannot see them sending you a refurbished laptop. When you call them, you can confirm this.

    They don't send you refurbished laptops...As you said, they either fix it or they send you a new one.

    If it's a hardware issue they almost never attempt to fix it. They simply send you a new unit. The old laptops are later refurbished and sold by apple as refurbished units (which apple sells for about 15-20% less i think)

    I understand that, but I figured hearing it directly from Apple would set this person's mind at ease. --- better than "It was on the internet so it must be true ."

    oh, absolutely. By all means he should call apple. Apple's phone support is excellent. I didn't mean to say he shouldn't call.

    Hmmm, I posted a couple of days ago that my new MBP was fine with the yes test under 10.6.6 but this was wrong unfortunately. It happened on first boot after a clean install of OSX.

    So I installed 10.6.7 and I haven't been able to reproduce the fault. From cold reboot, after waking from sleep, after running for ages, while leaving it idle, while continuing to work on it, all fine.

    Tests I've done in addition to the yes test are encoding files to MP4 with Handbrake while running some of my OpenGL code via Instruments, playing HL2 Episode One. I'll install VMWare Fusion over the weekend and build some code in VS2010 to see what happens.

    Temps for me when the machine is flat out are max about 86*C for the CPU and 80*C for the GPU which is better than I expected. Fan noise isn't too annoying while gaming, we're talking around the 5k RPM mark.

    Overall I'm happy with the machine. External build quality is decent and it's a good performer. Destroys my i7 860 Windows desktop box for most things, although mobile chipsets always lag for games.

    I have a question which is highly off topic...

    What does the "level 1" "level 2" ect. next to someones name mean in the context of these forums?

    edit:

    nevermind, as soon as i asked this i found the answer.

    10.6.7 did NOT solve my hard crash issue. I can't afford to lose any info in the medical records which I keep on this computer.

    Are there any Sandy Bridge MB Pros that are more reliable?

    I JUST DON'T GET IT.....is this a good computer or not?IS this a driver problem that will be fixed COMPELETELY?Because it seems it's a hardware problem......
    I am scared as ...... and i haven't experience this crash yet but if apple confirms this is a seriouse problem i just cant return it because in my country there is no apple
    Will it be fixed or we should wait for apple to recall all its mbp.?

    DOES ANY ONE EXPERIENCE THIS while running Windows?

    I'm just speculating here, but your problem may not be covered by the bug being addressed by this thread. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of the new 15 and 17" MBPs were affected by this bug. So you may have had this bug and something else. Under this scenario, it's possible that the OS update would have fixed the freezing from this bug but the same underlying issue associated with your specific computer (perhaps a bad piece of hardware) would remain but manifest with similar symptoms.

    Have you called applecare? That's the best solution to getting it fixed. I'm in a situation similar to yours. I cannot afford to loose the data on my computer as well. I was fortunate because while I was dealing with this I could use my old mac. If you have an alternative computer to use while you work through the applecare that would be the best.

    Sorry I don't have more to offer.

    @shishlik

    Did you ever consider that while you were trolling through a discussion thread that focuses on a problem you are more likely to encounter people who are going to skew heavily to the portion of the customer distribution representing those having a problem?

    Based on my experience, Apple will never declare something is a serious problem.

    If you read through the thread, you can determine what happens to people who are running windows.

    If you haven't experienced the crash yet, why are you so paranoid about it? Relax and try using fewer ellipses and capitalization.
