Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

macbook pro 17" 2011, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

So I was just about to buy a Macbook Pro today and it's pretty urgent considering it is for a new job as a video editor. I have to say though, I am completely awestruck at what I have been reading so far. For the first time ever, I am apprehensive about buying a product from Apple. Is there any guidance whatsoever as to when I can feel completely comfortable buying this thing? Will it be when Apple decides to make a public statement about fixing the problem for good? I'm not a wealthy man, $2500 bucks is not chump change for me, I need some reassurance.

Yes, I have one. Any time I use any flash heavy sites or try to use air disply with my Ipad it freezes. In reference to my macbook pro, I would say it is related to flash. because running pages and firefox with hulu.com. I am not a systems engineer but I would say the only time it crashes is with flash websites/video sites like hulu/youtube. Any thoughts anyone?

Dang this seems like a big issue! I"m trying to save for a new Macbook Pro 15" 2.2 Ghz to upgrade from my aging Macbook black (late 2006) but given the issue it seems to have I'm very hesitant. It will be a while before I have enough money. Possibly July. But it's definitely time for a new Mac. Do you think these issues would be resolved by then?

Isn't there any professional who knows if this is hardware or software issue?
Can't someone tell this by opening the macbook pro?

Last night I re-seated the memory in my MBP, and it has performed flawlessly since then. Fingers crossed that this is the simple solution.

I am having a similar problem as RichardStarr. My brand new early 2011 MBP will freeze up without any graphics intensive apps/multiple apps, whatever, running. In fact several times it has frozen up when it has just been sitting idly on my desk. Several times I have walked away from the machine, and come back to a blank screen which does not re-awaken until a hard restart. I suppose it is time to call Apple, but what a bummer for a brand new machine. My Powerbook G4 NEVER had any issues like this.

Hackintoshes are cheaper, can be faster and more stable.

I purchased a Macbook Pro (13.3" i5) just over a week ago, it froze within the first hour of usage and using imovie last night it froze no less than 3 times. Internet also seems slower than it ought to be considering I'm on 20MG broadband. I went from PC to mac to avoid exactly this type of issue and yet I appear to be having more problems with a macbook pro in a week than I have with my PC in a year. If any of you apple fans can say anything to keep me from returning it for a full refund I'd love to hear it!

Does anyone know if Apple has formally addressed this issue? Better yet, have they done more than just replace the "defective" systems?

Can someone tell me if this is a software or hardware issue?
And why i don't have these issues? (is it because i just work with internet and see movies in it?)

To test your system to see if it is having the same issue, run this:

The download link on MacUpdate doesn't seem to work anymore. When I click on it, I'm redirected on rapidshare.de and encouraged to buy a premium account!
