Mar 11, 2011 4:14 AM in response to Rensoomby hipshaker,I'm joining the Hard Freeze club.
Got my mbp 15" 2.2GHz march 8.
Have had 2 freezes so far, doing multicore rendering in After Effects CS5.
These have been hard frezees, meaning total lock-up, I was not even able to move the mouse.
I have since the installed iStat, and I've had my fans at 6200rpm on only 20-30% CPU load.
My temperature has peaked at 94c, but generally stays in the high 80's
I called Apple and asked for it to be returned, so the will pick it up one of the following days now, and I will get a refund.
Ironically, I'm going to buy it again, but I'm hoping to get a model without the problems.
I feel that, since this is not a problem that's affecting all new mbp's out there, I'd rather go for a new replacement than try and get this one "fixed". To me, it's broken, end of story. At this steep price, I'm not looking for a patch solution. I'm paying through the nose for a product I expect to work form the start. -

do you other guys have this error as well after the system froze? -
Mar 11, 2011 4:26 AM in response to Rensoomby AlexGGG,hi guys, I too am experiencing the crashes, twice so far while both related to starcraft.
i wonder if this is a hardware issues or firmware issue? should i just wait or return it -

Mar 11, 2011 4:57 AM in response to Jason Schroederby Ronda Wilson,You don't need to repair the hard drive from the Install DVD and use Safe Mode. They do the same thing, so one or the other will suffice (but the hard drive should be repaired every single time you have a hard freeze, since a forced shutdown can create hard drive problems).
Also, this isn't as important on a brand new machine since it hasn't been substantially altered with software updates, but, as things go forward, it's important to boot normally and use Disk Utility from the hard drive (rather than the DVD) to repair permissions.
Wishing all of you the best of luck. I'm sure loving my 13-incher, but my game-playing is limited to solitaire and Bookworm so I'm not seeing the problems you are seeing with graphic-intensive games. -

My computer was fully charged but plugged in while doing the AHT.
I do have connection to the internet during my freezes.
Mac doesn't dim, atleast not for 10ish minutes. However, fans eventually stop and music turns off.
Looking forward to calling back in to Apple in a few hours and getting this finished. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:17 AM in response to shamashby Nicholas N,shamash,
before you contact Apple (and by the way let us know what they say) - please try this...
Boot up into AHT (D key) (make sure you have less than 70% charge and more than 20% charge on your battery, and the power connector is in). Then do the std test and repeat a few more times without restarting - Do you get an error such as- tmp' error ?? -
Mar 11, 2011 6:20 AM in response to shamashby Nicholas N,Shamash... (as to the above...It Is Important to run AHT when battery is not fully charged and plugged into charger..as mentioned above) _ an error will definitely not occur if already charged or running test from battery only. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:21 AM in response to Nicholas Nby shamash,Before I do this, where to errors appear? I assume my system passed because it said something like "passes, 7" but is there a log? Or something that I can read that will show me? -
Mar 11, 2011 6:30 AM in response to shamashby Nicholas N,You boot up holding the 'D' key down and do the test the error will appear there (If it does). You have already done this 8 times and it would have said passed in the Apple Hardware Test screen. When you reboot normally you can again see the error under about this mac - more info and then diagnostics. Let me know how you get on. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:36 AM in response to Nicholas Nby shamash,So even though the test said I passed 7 times, the diagnostics tool says:
Apple Hardware Test:
Last Run: 3/10/11 9:07 PM
Version: 3A209
Loop Count: 4
Result: User stopped tests.
I'll unplug it and let it just run the tests until it dies and post the results when I turn it back on. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:41 AM in response to shamashby Nicholas N,Shamash, You need to run the tests with the *power supply plugged in and charging the macbook, make sure you have about 20-70% charge left on the battery when you do this*. Do not stop the tests. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:50 AM in response to Nicholas Nby shamash,Ohhhh I misread your original post. Apple had me run looped tests, so stopping the tests is the only way to, well, stop the tests :P Regardless, I'll die down to 20% and do tests then once you respond to the looped thing. -
Mar 11, 2011 6:54 AM in response to shamashby Nicholas N,Shamash you just need to run the STD test a few times it takes a few minuites each time, you do not need to do the extended tests they take ages. You can run the Apple hardware test when your charging your mac and the battery reads anything from 20% to 70%. so if your battery is around there or half full you can plug the charger in (if its not already plugged in) and run the tests now. Get back to me when your done
