Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

Why thanks very much for classing me as an IDIOT. I have a new custom made macbook pro 2.2 with hi res anti glare and 8gb ram.I hve had NO trouble with mine I use it to dj in a club but @ home i use it to copy  and edit videos for work.I Use hadbrake and adobe media encoder to change the file type and even though the machine is running flat out its never crashed (well not yet).

Im not saying its the same for everyone but so far im very pleased with mine.I did have last years model and had a lot of problems with it at first so im in no way an apple nut.In future please do not come on the forum and give your very one sided opinion and class most of the people who's macbooks are working properly Idiots

emm you have the 15" which was largely unnafected when compared to the 17" Which is the title of this thread on the machine of the previous user and most others.  The 15" freeze was (for most) taken care of by the 10.6.7 update along with the recent firmware updates..

As for the 17" it's clear the last 2 weeks or more has seen a revision change as i've noticed on many forums new buyers don't experiance any problems.

I said before, new owners should note their revision number so affected users can cross reference and maybe use this when dealing with Apple...

Apple loves to make sneaky revision changes to save the embarrassment of a any recal...  Those that complain enough would often get a new machine or new logicboard without a mention of any update.  It's just how Apple works..

I also have a 17 same spec which i use for most of my editing as well. its the same machine except for the screen.

Tho both machines took 4 weeks to arrive as I ordered them thru a 3rd party and i suspected at the time that there were some revisions because it only takes 3 days to get the mac built normally. Its a shame that apple dont aknowledge the problem as I asked them about it before I orederd both macs but they said they were unaware of any such problem even when I told them it was on their forum.

I have confirmed that 2011 MacBook Pro logic boards were silently modified by Apple around the end of April or early May. The way to find out what build you have, is to check what port your optical drive is on. Early builds are running at SATA II (3Gb/s) speed on port 2. The latest ones are running at SATA III (6Gb/s) speed on port 1. You can also check and confirm this in your System Profiler. Below is a picture of mine. My unit was built around March 10, although I took delivery in early May. I ordered it direct from Apple thinking they may do a silent upgrade and was hoping to get the latest build. I thought it was strange when the computer shipped right away from TN. Normally I get them direct from China, so my unit must have been stockpiled. I hate it when Apple pulls this crap--especially when a person shells out thousands of dollars.

my dvd is running at port 2, at 3g too, but i have no freezes or anything, so what does that mean?

also i had mine shipped with 10.6.7 preinstalled, which was actually i think released much later than the first MBPs was released. do i have first or second build? and if i have the first build, how come i dont have any freezes? (and trust me, i maxed the sh*t out of it:))

I have a mac 13" purchased at christmas time and am experiencing freezing every few minutes, sometimes immediately after a restart.  This has been occurring in the last few weeks.  Hope apple will fix this asap

Apple's authorized seller in greece named www.SYSTEMGRAPH.gr has accepted my replacement of my MBP 17" and will give me a new revision/build as soon as they have one from apple. big ups for their support, i will post back when i have my new MBP in a couple of weeks.

apple is a great company, you just need to work with the right resellers, who are confident and supportive to their customers :-)

If these freezes are related to the SATA ports which the optical drive is connected (I think it's a little bit weird cause until now, anybody in  these thread told that was using the optical drive when the machine froze, and if it's not being used, I think the freeze shouldn't happen), this is a known issue that occurs with some sandy bridge intel processors, only at  3Gb/s SATA ports, exactly as the last users are experiencing here. They already should be replaced or recalled, but due their replacement estimative, the total replacement would be complete at the end of April or early May. So many of macbook processors could still having the faulty processor. If this become proven, the change of the machine, or its logic board have to be done without any embrassing situation to the customer.

Here's a link showing the intel's sandy bridge faulty processors:

    http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/375258/intel_sandy_bridge_processor_recall _what_need_know/

...and a list of affected chipsets

List of Intel Sandy Bridge laptop processors. To date, laptops based on Intel Sandy Bridge Core i7 quad-core processors-- listed with Q suffix--are the only laptop systems potentially affected, according to Intel.

Is this thread about repeated kernel panics related to the problem?

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13295848#13295848

    And anyone tried this solution?

    http://www.nanofunk.net/macbook-pro-early-2011-freezes-and-kernel-panics-revert- to-32bit-to-have-a-stable-system/

It seems there's a lot of confusion and not that much coherent help being offered from Apple atm.  Slightly mad given this is their brand new high profile product
