May 20, 2011 10:45 PM in response to Rensoomby loyals,It's the second day after upgrading to 10.6.7 update. I put my 15" Macbook Pro 2011 to even heavier tasks and it didn't freeze. I rendered even larger videos. After the Fans the kept spinning wildly but it didn't freeze the screen unlike on the previous 10.6.6 version. I know this thread is about 17" MBP but It apparently looks that 10.6.7 update has fixed this issue. So I would urge to upgrade to 10.6.7 update and see if you still have the screen freezing issue.
I will try to report in a week or so again in this thread. But for now this issue is settled for me.

May 24, 2011 5:25 AM in response to Rensoomby MacFreak,Ok, now this is seriously something I think I would look to before I buy a new Macbook Pro 2011 15" High End Model.
Can anyone out here please suggest if I should really consider buying a MAC after seeing these many issues.. I mean, this is ridiculous to see a 90 page discussion with thousands of posts for a laptop which has been released hardly 90 - 100 days ago. And that too, not an ordinary Laptop, which is a common thing, but for an Apple Macbook Pro, which is considered to be one of the most sophisticated and highly in demand all over the Globe.
Please do give your genuine suggestions all you Mac Owners.. and Please no Anti-Apple or Anti-Windows Suggestions, I want genuine suggestions, not the ones that support only either of Apple or Windows.
Thanks!

Most of the innitial problems have been with 13 and 17" models but also the first revisions.. There have been what seems minor complaints with the 15" 2011. I myself had the freezing problem which was cleared up by 10.6.7, I also installed a SATAIII SSD with no problems at all. The machine is the best i've owned, i bought it in early March so i took a risk as an early adopter.
I doubt you would have any problems buying now (nearly four months after the first revision). I say go for it and enjoy. For the record i'm a RAW photographer and videographer so i tax this machine very heavily with no problems whatsoever. It also seems the latest 17" model has a new revision, we're not seeing any negative comments with those computers bought in the last 2 weeks.

I have taken it at heart to buy a MBP 2011. I have been waiting for this moment for 5 years now, and now finally I am going to own one very soon.
Thanks once again for your response!

May 24, 2011 7:03 AM in response to MacFreakby grafixjoe,MacFreak,
In answer to your inquiry,
I too watched this forum for months and shivered at the thought of plunking down $4500 (yes...$4500) for a loaded 17" MBP. I saw the postings begin to lighten up in April and figured Apple did one of their "silent fixes" and decided to take the leap because I needed it for multiple projects. Mine is the 2.3 GHz / Quad-Core / 512 GB SSD top of the line 17" model. I also purchased the 27" LED Monitor I run off the Thunderbolt port. I made the purchase in late April straight from the Apple Web Store (not from stock in a local Apple Store). It was a "Built To Order".
I am a Motion Graphics Designer / Compositor / 3D Designer / Video Editor and I pound on this machine daily with renders & HD Video & 48k audio...and I have never had a freeze.
I say go for it. Good luck.

May 24, 2011 9:38 AM in response to Rensoomby loyals,it's been a week a now. on my 15" Early Model (2011). And after the Upgrade to 10.6.7 there is No Freeze issue. I have tested mulitple times. and There is No Freezing issue. Also as other members reported. This issue is pertinent to 'early model' the models currently available in the Market won't have this issue. In my case I bought it last week. But I didn't buy it from Webstore instead it was in stock of the local apple dealer here. Since here in Pakistan there is No official Apple Store. Therefore it was the early Model despite the recent purchase. And also checked here in Apple site my MBP was built on 25th Feb.
So I will also recommend go for it. it's awesome as it's my first ever mac computer.

May 25, 2011 8:14 AM in response to MacFreakby Eveeta,MacFreak - just to give you a fuller picture. I bought a MBP 15" 2.2 with 10.67 installed and I experienced the hard freeze from the get go.
So it DOES affect the 15" and 10.67 doesn't always fix the problem.
I returned mine for a replacement which has just arrived. I'll let you all know how it goes

May 25, 2011 9:51 AM in response to Rensoomby GI30065,Well I also had the problems mentioned here. Read practically the whole post.
Read that the problem was highly related to memory. So I downloaded rember (gui version of memtest), and I've got a lot of errors. So I went to the mac shop, and told them about my problems, they took out the extra 4 gig, and replaced with a new module of 4 gig, I have a total of 8 gig, this all took about 5 minutes in the mac shop.
Went home and did the memtest again (loop set to 5), and guess what not a single error.
Then I did some heavy testing using HandBreake, among some other things as well, did this for a full two days.
And I can tell you guys, my MacBook Pro just works perfectly now, no more screen glitches, no more freeze, no more programs that suddenly closes without a reason, boy am I a VERY HAPPY customer.
My MacBook Pro is just fantastic, the new ATI Radion HD graphics card is just amazing !!
Played cyris, assassin's creed brotherhood,...(bootcamp), and the speed is just awesome !!
I wouldn't exchange my MacBook Pro, for any computer in the world.
BIG THANKS to Apple for making such fantastic products.
So my recommendation to all who have probs, download rember (google), make a movie of the freeze using your iPhone, and go to the mac shop, show them the movie and the log file from rember, and all your problems will be solved in just 5 minutes.
Regards to all.
Thanks for reading, and thanks Apple for making such great products.

May 25, 2011 12:16 PM in response to GI30065by MacFreak,Thanks for the information.
Many said it was the Graphics and you said it is the memory.
However, its rather confusing.. I am optimistic to get a good one, as I don't believe all of the MBPs would have a problem like some have had!
Thanks anyways for the information
