Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

I've been following this post for 30/40 pages or so - unsubscribing as its beyond constructive now.

For those that are still having issues with Graphic Card switching or random stalling, just do yourself a favour and diagnose the error with an Apple Store or Official Rep. I did last month, replicated the error with a simple launch of photobooth and the machine was fully repaired with a new logic board and new memory. I can throw anything at it now and it's handling. You should be able to run anything and with graphic switching easily - if not, take it in.

You can hang around and complain, find new ways to stall it, wait it out for a recall, software update but I can tell you, stop wasting time - it won't happen, your just setting yourself up for further dissapointment.

    Good luck,

    Jono.

Many are having freezing, stalling, etc.. issues because of heat. You can't fix that by going into an Apple store. There is nothing a a tech at an Apple store can do to fix that as the heat issues are related to an undersized/inadquete cooling system. And that's something that can only be fixed by redesigning the cooling system. If Apple redesigned the cooling system they would have to do a recall of all 2011 Mbps and replace the cooling systems in all of them with the redesigned part and Apple just wont do that. They wont do that because that would cost Apple millions. Instead, Apple will do nothing. They will just make it so you have to buy a Mbp 2012 -- which will come with the better cooling system, or at least we hope.

The 1 year limited warranty that you are most likely still under if this is a new purchase should cover this. I would read the warranty to be certain though.

Personally, I would fix it myself because I know Apple aint going to redesign the cooling system on the 2011 Mbps.

Purge Flash off your mac and notice CPU levels drop.

Ok everyone....I posted a few weeks ago about my purchase of a new MBP 15.  I waited until after my 14 day return period to update my post.

If you read my last post you know that I waited until the revised hardware was available and during my purchase at the Apple Store, I opened up the new unit and confirmed that it did in fact have the updated Sandy Bridg hardware (Serial ATA link speed at 6G on both ports) as previously posted here.

After two weeks of solid use and trying in every way to freeze the machine this thing is rock solid.  I am a heavy user with video editing, rendering, 3D CAD, multitrack audio, audio mastering, tons of plug-ins, Logic Studio, FC, Cinema 4D, Vectorworks CAD, Windows XP in Parallels with additional 3D CAD and modeling software.  I do this every day all day as I am an acoustician and AV Systems consultant.  Also, the machine as 8G of Crucial memory that I added after the first week.

The machine flies...fast, stable and no problems whatsoever.

    FYI.

    Hi there,

i have read some posts - but 96 sites is too much.

First - i got exactly the same problem as "mac osx snow..."

and i can reproduce this every time i want... starting itunes ... starting firefox oder chrome --- freeze.

    itunes standalone - no problem

    ff/chrome standalone - no problem.

but i dont know if this a problem of heat or an incompatibility with this two program - because i also play wow or L4D2 for about a minimum of 2 hours and nothing happens. I also completly reinstalled SL - complete fresh - not TM-Backup used -- same problem.

Can anyone link me a program that records the heat history, that i can check if my MBP 15" 2011 with i7 got the same problem. If so - and i cheerless think so - i got the same.

What did you mean with purging the flash? Can´t follow - i´m german and my english is more bad than good.

But if this isn´t a resolution, apple get´s his 2400€ of ******** immedialty back. Because this is a warranty case, even more if they announced this problem (do they? i think so, or? )

It´s not over till the fat lady sings and i don´t let muck me (is this correct?! )

@nacra .-. don´t understand your post ... do you mean that you have waited, until the MBP got an revision, and with this revision (i dont recordnized this) there are no problems?

Thanks a lot and have a great day.

Do you have a solution/ diagnostic tool now?

"First - i got exactly the same problem as "mac osx snow..."

    itunes standalone - no problem

    ff/chrome standalone - no problem."

How can you reproduce it? I got these problems daily but cant force them.

No.. i have not found any tool... im looking for something like on windows (this is my first mac) - a tool which logs the complete I/O from system to get a hand on the problem. for now i only got a freeze and don´t know why - no temperature-tool either

Reproduce -- no problem for me -.. starting itunes ... wait a minute and klick on "music" -- than start FireFox .. wait a minute .. go to itunes an scroll up and down 2-3 times... than immediatly the system freezes. :-/

    Totally crap!
