Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

    screen-capture.png

Yesterday i got another "highlight" ... within my described "lagging" or "stucking"-problem i got graphic-failures. unbelievable :-/ looking something like the screenshot.. but only 1cm x 1cm in the upper right (and no gaming at this time - just on desktop)

    Unbenannt.jpg

P.S I´ve also made an RAM-Test with "Rember" - no failures - also does a HDD-Test with apple-onboard-tool -- no failures. it´s getting me crazy

some of you are looking in "logs" to see kernel panics etc... where can i find these? sorry - but my first mac

The image shows that your SSD is connected to de SATA at 6Gb/s, this is the standard for all 2011 MBPs. To see if you got the new build you must click on Intel series 6 Chipset but, in that one which has MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898, because the new build has the optical drive working with a 6Gb/s speed link too. Check it out.

The aquarium is a web page wrote with WebGL, a language that brings to javascript the capability to generate 3D graphics. Google for "webgl aquarium" and you'll find what we're talking about. I don't know if it runs in safary, but try downloading Chrome and run the aquarium, select the fish number = 1000 and wait to see if your machine freezes. There's a video in this thread showing a nem mbp crashing when running aquarium with 1000 fishes.

Other question, did somebody updated the system to version 10.6.8? I've read that update fixes the waking from sleep freezing issues, maybe could fix the freezing too.

    thx java...i´ll try it

i´m running on 10.6.8 since release ... so don´t help for me :-(

can u also please tell me where i can find the system logs? e.g. where kernel panics are logged etc.

Update... running the aquarium for about 5 minutes with 1000 fishes in diffrent views.. all options set to on with FF 5.0 and Chrome.. no problems.

that would have been to easy .. going in apple store.. open page .. crash ..

Update 2 .. the one from mamozun is to hard for the mbp it lags ... only 1 fish will swim good ...    20 fishes = 1FPS *lol*

I got the machine back today with a new logic board (3GB to the optical drive, which indicates I've got an old replacement board)

Guess what - three-beep after like five minutes of uptime!

I tried to attach my Matrox DualHead2Go Mac edition and the screen on the laptop got garbled and the machine freezes.

Now I'm writing on it detached from everything, but it's going back to the store tomorrow.

    Crappy product for sure.

After a few minutes in my lap after a clean start during the time machine backup this happened:

    IMAG1076.jpg

The screen displaced itself a few inches to the left, wrapping around.

This is a machine just returned from the shop with an exchanged logic board! I'm furious right now.

i´m with u ogr3, this is not acceptable... this isn´t a 500 bugs laptop from ALDI (ALDI = super discounter in germany ) for this price it have to be the best you can buy with money...200 bugs more and it have to make coffee... i´m very disappointed what crap they sold to customers... and that apple apperantly don´t recordnize that they got a thread, with 90 sites, nearly 400.000 views and 1500 replies full of the same problem.

i´ll try it too - and will told the guy to make a notice, that they don´t send me the old revision.

It they send me the old one, next step advocate... for this price i got no humor :-/

I agree with all of this thread who doesn't accept the lack of information given by apple about this issue. The truth is that for Apple, the number of MBPs with this issue should be acceptable, in my opinion more less 0,3% of the machines shipped, giving them time to do the fixes without a recall. Another point is apple will start shipping machines with Lion, that may ensure the new machines will have the last hardware build. So one way to try avoiding problems for people who want buy the new MBPs is await for machines with lion pre-installed.

While apple doesn't sold this issue, in this thread, one of the first guys who found that the early May MBPs  have a new hardware build, proved this to the seller and they gave him a new macbook with the new revision immediatly. You could try that. I posted here many sites showing sandy bridge issues related to sata 3Gb/s links. You can google for this "secret update made by apple at SATA links", I'm pretty sure that I read this at appleinsider, macrumors or 9to5mac with a name almost like that.

Safari won't run WebGL, so use Google Chrome instead.

ok, after a lot of software fixs (format, reinstalll osx, reset SMC, reset physical component via software all suggested by apple guru...) i have the same problem: my mbp freezes with the sad ball rotating forever.

It happened when i log on at my file vaulted account! only there and only when i am loggin in.

    Is anyone experimenting the same?

Sometime happened when is doing heavy calculation (rendering) but rarely.

    my specs: mbp 2011 early 2.2ghz 8g ram 500gb @7200
