Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

    Ok .. i´m with you

8GB (surely not from apple) and SSD - still crashing.

today i´ll install lion and check if the problem still remains.

    Feedback comes after that

    @Apple -- shame on you ... over 2000bugs for this crappy ****.

There can be many reasons for your Mac to freeze. If you can post your logs, we might be able to help in this forum. If your memory is not the original memory bought with your machine, my first recomendation would be to put back the original memory and try to see if you can get it stable.

    So - Update.

For now it seems that the "freezing" has gone with lion - at least i can not reproduce the freezing like before (itunes + firefox and some various programs started together) but i´m not confident - i´ll keep a eye on it and will post an update within the next 5 days.

@jbjoret - what logs? and where can i find it? bzw. nach den log-speicherort hab ich schon öfter hier gefragt - hat mir leider noch keiner gesagt ist mein erster mac. am ram sollte es eigentlich nicht liegen, weil die anderen ja die orig. 8GB genommen haben und den gleichen fehler haben

Update -- LOL ... after sending my mbp to sleep - started itunes again .. Freeze fans speeding up etc.

so nothing changed for me ... last try is to change the RAM back to the original. if that still don´t solve the problem i´ll have to call apple

I took my MBP 17" to an Apple Store yesterday and they did what hardware tests they could in the time they had (it took me 4 hours to get there and 4 hours to get back)

They could find no fault so suggested that I took out the 8GB RAM and put back the 4GB that it came with. I can do this tomorrow, when my family join me on holiday here. I'll see if the freezes go away. If so I'll ask Crucial to relace the 8GB RAM and see if that makes a difference. If not then it looks like these machnies cannot handle 8GB RAM.

As for logs - with the kind of fault I am getting (patterns on screen, no response from machine at all, occasional 'beep, beep, beep', there are no logs. This is a freeze, not a crash or a panic.

Well, haven't been back in a while. To recap. I bought a MBP 15", with 10.6.8 installed back in March. It was a problem from the word go. Hard-freezing as soon as it had to do anything graphic-intensive. So, I asked for a replacement in April, and got one in early May.

Since then - so far - not a single problem. And the battery life seems better as well.

So, can I just say one thing to all of you experiencing problems. - Do NOT let the tech guys fob you off. Do NOT let them tell you it's your faault, do NOT let them tell you to install the OS again, or get different RAM, or anything.Do NOT end up wasting time and money faffing about.

    **** no.

This is a £2000 (give or take) machine, and they have no right to demand you try and fix it yourself if it's new out the box! You have a right to a refund or replacement, and if you ask firmly enough you'll  get one, because they know this is a real problem even if they pretend they don't.

So, don't be intimidated just because it's Apple. They shipped a dodgy product, and they have to make good.

I share this experience, i.e. I bought the machine in the end of June and it has been randomly freezing since day 1. However Apple Sweden seems to totally ignore this. The store has forced me to change the Motherboard two times and the Airport card once without the problem going away. The technician claims that he has run the machine without my memory, SSD or the built in display connected - thus it's a design issue/motherboard issue/cooling issue that isn't resolved by changing only the motherboard. However, they STILL force me to send it to their repair shop, where nothing has happened for several days now.

    I'm speechless.

    @maddeen

Now we can see this problem unlikely is a software problem, it's a hardware fault. I'm very curious why apple isn't doing nothing about that ******* thing, I saw they started a iMac hard drive replacement due some failures that was occuring with them. And the faulty MBPs? This thread is giantic and is impossible that Apple's engineering team doesn't know anything about this problem. The most likely cause is that admiting that many MPBs have a faulty hardware would **** with their sells, because if many people could buy a PC with the same spec for U$700 why buying a expensive laptop that has problems that aren't beeing solved? It's easier realesa a new secret revision like I posted a few posts before.

I bought a macbook pro in 2008. Still have it. Still has the same problem with freezing up. Except this model the mouse cursor and keyboard freezes, the unit will only work after plugging in an external keyboard and mouse or doing a hard reboot. After spending many hours investigating it, there is a design flaw in the hardware which causes the lockup. Now reflecting back it did happen when I first bought it. I thought it was software related and figured Apple would send out a patch. Thats why I ****** at Apple spent 2000 bucks for a system that has a hardware flaw in it. Dont get me wrong I still like the MBP thats why I am reading here. I was thinking of getting a another but I did my research and after reading this thread it appears there is a hardware flaw in this model also. If you can get your money back get it until they fix the flaw or stop putting out defective products that we pay huge money for.  This thread just saved me $2000. You see I need a reliable computer. I run a business from it. I can not tolerate freezing up and hard reboots in the middle of a business deal.

i totally agree. If i had known this fault i would never have spent 3000 euros on this machine!Ever...I would have gone for a 1500e pc and used the rest for a nice holiday...

So bad this comes from such an important company and so bad that is'nt doing much about it.

Btw i love the ergonomy of this laptop but first we need a stable product.

    Hi,

I've had my MBP for almost 2 years now, and honestly, have been proud of it as a really good laptop. However, until 2 days ago, every good memory has vanished with the frustration that I believe every single one of you has went through.

It first started with sudden inability to connect to the internet. I had to shut it down (the normal way) and turn it back on to recover the internet signal.

After 3-4 times of the same occurrence, everything takes longer and it hangs in occassions which i could only reboot (illegally) by holding the power button down for a 6 seconds.

Freeze: the freeze is not just unresponsiveness of mouse or keyboard because attaching an external mouse does not solve the problem. Beach-ball loading circle does not appear, any movie on at that moment will stop and its sound will repeatedly stutter. (So I listened to Joey from Friends say "HA" for 100 times)

Afterwhich, all machine sounds will die out (dvd loading sound as well). After 10 times of the same problem, I realised that going onto the internet will activate the "freeze" (at that point of time I could watch Friends for 10 hours with the Airport off and nothing will go wrong)

I tried resetting everything I can, repairing disk utility and even going to the apple store (told me hard drive was perfectly fine, Network connection was perfectly fine and told me to re-install the OS X which i did by myself because they would charge $200 USD) I re-installed everything I could and still nothing would change. All of this happened in one day.

And in the next morning, i tried to boot with the OS X cd, where it freezes halfway through. After the 3rd time i decided to give up.

I wrote this out in a very detailed manner to find out if everyone is facing this exact same problem. I update all my softwares and nothing has gone wrong. In two days, everything has went wrong. Now, my macbook won't start after the 2nd or 3rd reboot. The grey apple page will appear but it won't move forward to the blue page or the screensaver. If it did, it will only stay on for 10 seconds before freezing up. (despite the airport being on or off)

Sorry if this took you a very long time to read. If you do have this problem please tell me if any solution might have worked for you. (Will taping the ribbon wire down as another thread has discussed will aid in my condition?)

Has anyone ordered a Macbook Pro (2.0/2.2/2.3Ghz) in the past 2 weeks ? IF YES, what is the status regarding heating issue/freezes/SATA speed (3 vs 6 Gbp) ?
