Well, I've got my new RAM from Crucial. Since I swapped out the olf 8GB and went back t the stock 4GB I've not had a crash at all.
Tomorrow I'll put the 8GB in and see what happens.
Try buying from OWC

Or certified Kingston memory.
OK - that's my next step.
All I can say is Crikey! Kingston RAM is twice the price of Crucial RAM.

Not easy to find in the UK though.
They ship internationally, and are often still cheaper than the local suppliers.

Oct 13, 2011 9:57 AM in response to Rensoomby musiqgirl203,I was getting ready to make a new topic when I came across this one, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem!
Several times over the last couple of months my computer has done exactly what you described. Everything will freeze except for the cursor, and the sound will continue. I also noticed that my computer got very hot during this time.
I've taken my laptop to the Apple Store at least 3 times trying to figure out what the problem was, and they couldn't find an immediate problem, they ran the hardware test and all that and my computer appeared to be "fine." but of course it's not.
Also, whenever my computer gets super hot, the screen becomes glitchy.
I really don't know what to do because my computer has been an angel up until now (I bought this computer in December 2010)
Has anyone found a solution yet??

Oct 14, 2011 4:10 AM in response to Rensoomby maddeen,Ok - here´s my final statement.
After changing the logic board at a retail store my MBP i7 works like a charme - or better - "as expected" for a +2000bugs notebook (Time since repair - 2 Weeks!! with gaming, working, sleep mode etc.)
Seems so that the only fix for this problem is a change of the logic board.
So i only can say -> you wanna fix? Go to the store and change the logic board. Duration for this is about 2-3 days - depending on the delivery time for the new logic board
Note - my retail store first tried to say it was a "software problem" - keep on telling that you will only accept the change of the logic board!!! Stay hard!!!

Oct 18, 2011 4:21 PM in response to Rensoomby G3PBtoG52GHZ,Ok, here goes. The good news and the bad news.
First, to save you going back through my posts to see the history of my problem:
MBP 17" 2.3Ghz bought with 4GB of RAM
8GB RAM ordered from Crucial, £50
Machine working fine for a day or two until I installed the 8GB RAM. I got the crashes, 'beep beep beep' and tiled patterns on the screen, requiring a hard reset. No messages in crashlog.
Took it back to where it was bought, a week old and got a brand new machine. Same thing happened.
Took the brand new machine to a different Apple Store and they did a soak test on it - well, as much as they could considering I had travelled 3 hours each way to get to the store. No fault found.
Got an RMA from Crucial to send the memory back for a replacement.
Got the replacement 8GB of RAM.
Installed it. Kernal Panic.
Swapped hte modules over. Kernal Panic.
Ordered Kingston RAM. £200
Installed it.
To date - 24 hours of running, with a mix of FCPX, Photoshop, iTunes, Parallels
Smooth as a nut.
So, the good news is I appear to have fixed my machine.
The bad news is that Crucial, for me, aren't as crucial when buying memory, and I need to think of RAM as an expensive commodity again.
Still, at least my £2,300 computer is reliable.

Oct 18, 2011 8:15 PM in response to wonslungby mibrooks,Well, mine locks up. If you use LogMeIn, when exiting it lcks up randomly and completely. I have four Mac, one running Lion, the others the latest version just prior (I'm writing this on an iPad). Now, with this iPad upgraded to iOS 5 it locks up from merely plugging it in! It's a MESS. Did Apple just toss this junk over the wall? This is as bad as the garbage I experienced with Microsoft after they outsourced their software development to India. Oh god, I'm afraid to ask. Has Apple outsourced the development of this garbage offshore?

Oct 24, 2011 12:13 AM in response to Rensoomby LMR UK,I have now had enough of this. I am utterly disgusted that Apple have decided to basically ignore its customers when they pay over £2000 for a supposedly "top of the range" laptop! I have filed a complaint with the UK based consumer TV show BBC Watchdog. For anyone experiencing the same, I strongly urge you to do the same!
Apple will have no choice but to sit up and take notice if this problem is exposed in the media.
You can contact Watchdog here -

I for one, have simply had enough!

Oct 24, 2011 2:07 AM in response to LMR UKby deborah16,Well done!
I am in the UK too and I contacted Trading Standards some time ago with my complaint which they logged and so it might be an idea for you to do the same.
My Macbook Pro 15" i5 was purchased last December and after 5 months started having various issues until one morning after putting it to sleep the night before it had a black screen and unresponsive keyboard. I took it to the nearest Apple Store (18 miles away) where they replaced the logic board and when I asked why it had gone so soon I was told it was very unusual!
I have now discovered that the logic board has the wrong serial number which means that either someone out there has mine or we both have the same serial number which is going to be an issue if we need more service. I spoke to the Apple Store and they said they would order another logic board and I will need to go back to have it replaced.
To cut a long story short I have decided to return this laptop to the well known online store as they have offered me a full refund.
I urge you to check out The Sale of Goods Act as you have rights and your complaint should always be put to the seller of the goods and don't worry if it is out of warranty as these rights last for 6 years.
Some other discussions on here you may not have come across yet and relate to more of the same problems.
