Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

Returned the machine in original packaging today. They have to send it to the repair centre (sixth time) in order to try to get Apple to take their responsibility and classify this as junk.

Three motherboards, two sets of RAM and the machine can still crash within minutes of booting. I expect a full refund now.

I didn't go thru all the pages, but seems I have the same problem. Brand new 17 inch 2,4 i7. It's two days old and I had about 10 freezes.

Mouse pointer dissapears, just a fixed screen.

When watching a movie the sound continued but image froze.

Closing the macbook to put it to sleep, no avail it stays awake in the freeze mode.

I tried two superduper clones, both froze. I am trying now a Carbon copy cloner and installed

gfxcardstatus, I seleceted the integraded only and hope this copy will work. As for sure Apple will ask me to do a fresh install, again......

    Will call Apple tomorrow.

Can I ask for a new macbook immediately or will I have to go thru the whole hassle of re-install, test, third party etc. etc. as for me it's clear this is a hardware problem ?

If anyone has some input I be happy to hear.

Well, I can tell you that the 13" MacBook Pros are doing the same thing.  Mine froze last night when I was trying to read some e-mails.....wasn't doing anything graphically intensive.....just reading e-mails, and Safari froze.  I finally got the Safari screen to close, but when I would open it back up, it would be a white page with the "spinning beach ball of death". I had to force quit Safari and I restarted my computer and it worked fine for a little bit, but then I got the white page and the beach ball of death again, and thought I was going to have to use a PC to finish what I was trying to do, but when I moved the mouse, it came out of it.  This is not the only issue I am having with mine.  I just bought mine a few days ago and am thinking very, very seriously of taking it back and getting a PC.

    Thanks and God Bless!!

    Wesley

Running MBP 13" all stock, besides the 8GB of RAM.  Having the freezing now only when running steam with Civilizations V.  It will be fine and then freeze, but the mouse/ pad is responsive.  Only started once I got this game a few days ago.  No problem running StarCraft II.  I have had multiple applications open like Lightroom, elements, and a few other photo programs with no problems.  I am assuming it has to do with Steam but see it may be a different problem, any ideas?

    Bonjour,

No I also don't think it will solve the problem. This is what they told me:

If the machine is less then 2 weeks old they gave me two options:

    1. I could ask to change or

    2. to take it some where so they can look at it.

I went for the first option no questions asked.

This ones feels quicker and better. Another thing that I forgot to mention is that with the faulty one I tried to do a hardware test (start while holding the "D") that never worked. With the new one it's ok.

So Romain keep us updated as I also like to know, seems we have a similar issue. Although I do not like to make that decission to quickly there are a lot of things inside a macbook pro, and different things can be wrong.

    Bonne journée d'Anvers, Belgique

    Johan

This I do not know, let them first do what they propose, if the problem continues I would try to get it replaced.

They don't know you didn't use it for two monthes.

    Let us know

    regards

    Hello All,

I got my Macbookpro 2011 in march, it was running totally fine till i had a SD card reading problem, i took it to Apple care they replaced my logic board. Since then i am facing these sudden freeze and while working my mouse disappers and the screen display splits in into 2 halfs. i did a hardware test it showed no problem, i reset the SMC and the PRAM the problem still exist. The apple care is suggesting me i should format my HDD and reinstal Mac OSX , they said i may also have a problem with my logicboard. Am goin to format my mac at the Apple Care center. Let see what happens.

Well.... I finally found the problem, or, rather, a tech at my local Mac Store did. I don't even think Apple is aware of this. The PK3000 modem, of all things, caused my lockup. It's a hard freeze, too. The problem is this &))(;/:; thing is used all over the place. QWEST gives them away! Get ri of it. It's been three weeks, now, and I have had no freezes, no lookups, no problems whatsoever. This is for both my MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air. Apple deserves an apology, but the really need to blacklist the PK3000. Now, can someone tell me why that modem causes this problem?

    Hi All!,

So, saturday walking to my apple store to pick up my repaired macbook pro (they changed my SSD).

As I Has suposed, this change desn't solve anything. After 2minutes of internet navigation, I quit Safari and the mac freezes again!!!

So, they keep my machine... Next step: change of my motherboard...
