Jan 25, 2012 6:13 AM in response to Jay__b74uby joshEjosh,@Jay - That didn't work for me. If I do anything that uses the ATI adapter the freeze will eventually happen. If I use gfxCardStatus to force 'integrated' mode only, the machine remains stable.

@adudenamedsam 'discrete only' mode was not stable for me. The freeze did not happen until I started moving windows around and stuff.

Feb 8, 2012 9:10 AM in response to oGr3by oGr3,After two months without hearing anything from the retailer, a brand new MacBook pro fall 2011 arrived at the office today. Same specs as the original machine.
So after seven months of misery, I get to try a new machine. I'll report back how it goes.
I am not impressed at all with Apples return policy in Sweden.

Feb 8, 2012 10:40 AM in response to oGr3by mrchief,Just thought I'd chime in with a quick rundown of my fall 2011 MacBook Pro experience. Picked up one of these guys this past Novemeber:
15" 2.2Ghz i7 MBP
High-res display upgrade
8GB RAM upgrade
750GB HD upgrade
After about a month, the display began freezing with heavy distortion, requiring a hard reboot. Narrowed it down to an issue with either the automatic graphics switching or the Radeon HD 6750m. Using gfxCardStatus to force it to always use the Intel HD Graphics 3000 chip resulted in a system that was utterly stable.
Ran the Apple Hardware Test on loop overnight, came back and it had frozen up on the 7th pass. Apple Store hardware diagnostics found no immediate hardware defects. Apple Store agreed to replace the logic board free of charge.
Did a full wipe and reinstall of Lion, followed by a user migration from my Time Machine. The laptop quickly began displaying similar graphics errors. Display freezing upon opening the lid, freezing and corruption when playing fullscreen video, and just last night, a corrupted login prompt after opening the lid.

Feb 9, 2012 6:37 PM in response to Rensoomby studiomusic,I too am getting random freezes on my 2011 MBP 17" quad core.
Must be a graphics switching thing as it won't do it when plugged in, just when unplugged.
Also noticed it is always when quiting Firefox.
Frustrated.

Feb 10, 2012 5:32 AM in response to Rensoomby bruce305,No more freezes. My 2009 15" MBP started to freeze at random times after I upgraded to Lion. After reading many blog entries about various attempts by others to fix this problem, I found a solution that worked for me. I removed Sophos Antivirus and installed ClamXav instead. No more freezes after more than a week later. Apparently Sophos was running into a tight loop while scanning for problems, and this hung up the system.

Feb 17, 2012 8:06 AM in response to Rensoomby Wejner,I bought the late 2011 MBP 2nd gen i7 quad core 2,4 ghz with a 128 gb SSD, and experienced the first hard freeze a couple of weeks ago and had to force reboot. Now it freezes whilst running SPOTIFY and SAFARI simultaneously, I certainly didn't pay 3100$+ to have the computer freezing like a machine from 2001.

Feb 17, 2012 11:24 AM in response to Rensoomby uilhao,I'd like to add to the discussion, it seems that most of the users here have fixed this issue by turning the graphics card auto switch off, it has for me as well.
One thing I'd like to point out, tho the computer seems to freeze, only the screen actually freezes, if you have music or video playing, it will continue to do so, all the keyboard shortcuts and etc work. So Ive made several tests and all the times the computer froze(really just the screen), everything else on the mac would work fine.
So until I figured this out, I was hard shutting the computer every single time. Once I discovered that it was really just the screen, I would just hit the power button, then hit enter so the computer would shut off correctly, avoiding other issues related to continuous hard shutting.
This seems to be a flaw OS Lion, and/or the new macs with auto switching, either way Apple needs to get their act together and fix this. They've announced a new OS version, yet they havent even addressed this issue with an update for this OS, really lame....

Feb 18, 2012 4:47 PM in response to Rensoomby alexaseltine,I have been experiencing the same random freezing. Interesting enough, every time it happens I am not running any graphically intense software, although it happens too when I run Final Cut Pro X or CS5. I already did the PRAM Reset as well as teh VRAM reset. I also did a clean install of OS X Lion 10.7.3. I called into my local apple store and set up an appointment. We'll see what happens. My hope is that I will at least get a logic board replacement (the logic board with the DVD drive capable of 6 GBits/Second). I also emailed the CEO Tim Cook to inform him on the issue, giving him a link to this to this. I will post when I after my appointment with the Apple Store Genuises.

Feb 20, 2012 10:10 AM in response to Rensoomby alexaseltine,Could anyone who had a Logic board change repost what Apple did to replace their logic board. Did you ask for them to replace it with the newer logic board that supports the 6 GBs on the Superdrive? Does Apple even recognize that the original logic board is faulty, because I believe that we have come to the consensus that the original logic board with the superdrive bay that supports speeds of 3 GBs is faulty. Thanks a lot. I'm hoping to get my MacBook Pro running normally in a couple of weeks.
