Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

I have a 13" Macbook pro and lately my laptop has been freezing everytime. Sometimes it freezes when the apple logo comes on or when it finally open but it freezes already without me doig anything yet. Ive never had this problem before, im pretty good of taking care of this laptop and it doesnt have a lot of files because i delete  stuff after i put it on my flash drive. I dont think my laptop is that old already for it to do that its only been 2-3 yrs old, i mean before i just have windows pc and it was runnin for about 5 years even though its slow. Ive already tried to reboot it and try reinstalling the disk that it came with but it still keeps freezing. It seems as if a lot of MBP owners are experiencig the same issues. I havent upgraded the newest OS X, do i have to uprade, maybe it has something to do with that?

Hi Roriro, may be problem with the graphic card or display screen.. Have you done any thing done to pin-point the problem?

One of my friend had this problem before on his MBP 15" E2011. Distortion will appear very random and more frequently with each usage. When he sent it to Apple, was told that it is a common problem and was replaced a Graphic Card. Hope this helps.

I'm on my second MBP late 2011 17in in the last month - the first one kept freezing and I'd have to force close while trying to save large files and sometimes just small files in Photoshop.  While working with an Apple tech they informed me that my complete hard drive had failed.  After replacing the hard drive the problems persisted and the computer began to follow the same pattern of freezing. At this point I decided it was probably just a problem with the computer and returned it but now I'm thinking its a problem with Lion possibly.

With my second MBP now I'm having the exact same problems.  I thought maybe the migration assistant had something to do with it because I've NEVER had this problem with my 2009 15in MBP.  I'm still referring back to my old computer to get any work done; it is just starting to work a little slower so I was looking for an updated faster computer so I figured I'd try out Lion.  I've been completely dissatisfied.  I can't believe the problems I've had.  I'm going on 2 months without being able to have any type of work flow and its driving me crazy.

Does ANYONE have a way to fix this problem - or should I be sending back my $2600 computer and just using my slow 2009 model.

It looks likes upgrading to photoshop cs5 fixed the freezing problem - I had a friend of mine tell me Lion doesn't like cs4 because is 32bit? and cs5 is 64bit?  I'm not really exactly sure what that means except the two aren't compatable.  Since the upgrade I've not had it freeze up on me.

Upgrading CS is not the solution. It is not running all the time.

2011 MacBook Pro's will hang because of the CPU integrated GPU and because of that, at there is way too much thermal paste between CPU and cooling element.

I did open my MacBook Pro and found out, at there was more thermal paste what is needed. At least 100x times. It was all around the chips on the motherboard.

I cleaned motherboard and CPU and cooling element and added new thermal paste.

Now my MBP has been running 27 days without any crashes and temperatures stays under 70 celsius (previously basic YouTube video watching get the temp's to 103 celsius and then MBP crashed with the Apple screen "You need to restart Your computer").

My computer hasn't been overheating though - I'll have just turned it on and it was hard freezing with Photoshop running usually though.  And for some reason it seems to have fixed the problem for now.  Maybe my issue was different - I'm not sure.  Thoughts?

From the january (I bought this MBP then), my MBP has not been crashed with the CS4 MC.

But when I have used CPU intensive application, like video editing, benchmark tools (GeekBench) and basic movie watching (integrated DVD player and VLC or OSX movie player) MBP has crashed when CPU temperatures go over 100.

I follow the temperatures with the Temperature Monitor Lite application (free).

The thing is, at there really is more than needed thermal paste between CPU and cooling element and that causes that, at it isolates CPU from the cooling element. If temperature get too high, OSX hangs to save CPU to split a part.

This series of MBP is not available anymore (production ended), so Apple is well known of this series problems. What I wonder is that, at why they did not make a recall and fix the problems. They repair the MBP's only then, when computer has stopped working and customer returns the computer. Then they change the Logic Board/Mother Board because of the broken CPU.

When user itself do the thermal paste change, then MBP's warranty is void.

Hi there..... Under no circumstnaces would I recommend that you buy a MacBook Pro. There are hundreds & hundreds of pages of forums where users are highlighting their problems. To make matters worse Apple could not care less about trying to help all of these customers who so clearly have purchased defective goods.

If you base your recommendations on posts from this or any support discussions group, you will never recomend anything at any time. It is the nature of discussion groups like this to attract people who are having problems, not for people who don't. So it stand to reason that there are a lot of posts about problems. As far as your claim that "Apple could not care less", you couldn't be further from the truth. Even here, you can find posts about how Apple is very responsible to defects in their products, which are statistically small. Are there issues where it takes a while to resolve the issue? Yes, but just because Apple doesn't respond as quickly as you think they should, there is no indication that they are ignoring them.

I have a mid 2011 Macbook Pro 15 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB running the latest version of Lion.

    The problem with the Macbook:

On startup the trackpad and keyboard does not respond so I have to hard shutdown.

When doing work on Pages the same thing happens or at random times.

I've stopped the automatic gfx switching and it still freezes.

I have had the HD replaced and same problem.

I've tried with an external keyboard and mouse and the same problem occurs.

I am very lucky if i am able to use my Macbook for much, considering i've only had the laptop for just over 3 months, I am certainly not impressed at all.

I am  ot sure what the problem is but thinks it could either be Lion or the gfx card. Either way apple needs to sort this out. My laptop wasn't cheap and being a student I have a lot of work to do but I am constantly worried that the mac is going to freeze when doing work.

Add my 2011 MBP to the list.  I was able to get it to freeze up for a Genius at the Apple Store by playing a 1280 by 720 MP4 with the volume maxed (brought headphones).  At home sometimes I had to open itunes and a couple other apps while the MP4 was playing, but it pretty much crashed every time.  Anyway, after it crashed a couple of times at the Apple Store the Genius (really nice guy by the way) tried to boot it from a remote server and it wouldn't even do that!

He knew then it was toast and ordered a logic board replacement.  I get it back in a couple of days and I'll let you know how it's doing.  My 1 year warranty expires in 60 days.  I will be getting Applecare.

Also word to the wise, I bought my Mac on ebay as I have my previous 2.  With this one the guy gave me a false serial number to check for myself it had apple care.  I never even thought of double checking the serial number once I got the computer...well I found out at the Apple Store I did NOT have apple care and he had given me the wrong serial number.  So if you buy used online, check the serial.

I just bought the new Mac book pro 13" a week ago, my fiancé persuaded me to switch to a Mac. I can't say I'm impressed, I have already returned one due to it freezing. Well once again I have that stupid rainbow wheel, mousepad doesn't work, the darn thing has been spinning for over an hour. You would think that after you invest in a brand new computer and pay the price that you do for a Mac product you would think that it would work flawlessly. This is going back in the morning. Really disappointed.
