Sep 29, 2013 3:10 PM in response to Rensoomby Nitroide,Same problem with my MacBook Pro 8,3, 17-inch, late 2011, Radeon 6770m and Intel HD Graphics 3000. Only works by keeping GFXGardSatus manually on "Integrated Only" option. Otherwise, flickering, distorted screen and unresponsive computer forces to hard reset.

Sep 29, 2013 9:15 PM in response to Nitroideby alcontre,So I'm trying to get a broader perspective of what might be going on here. It seems that a lot of people have discrete card issues with some sort of screen corruption which can sometimes (but not always) be avoided by forcing the integrated card to run. It seems that a lot of people have also reported a significantly higher amount of thermal paste than what is normally used, between chips and the heatsink/fan assembly. Could it be that the random shut-offs we are seeing is the result of latent damage from repeated overheating cycles which eventually cause stress fractures in connections etc.?
-
Sep 29, 2013 9:18 PM in response to alcontreby alcontre,It would also explain the crashes when a computer is not particularly under load or is just booting -- thermal expansion of hardware could shift around and sever potentially-already-stress-fractured connections.

Sep 30, 2013 5:40 AM in response to alcontreby Wojzo,I'd like to chime in here with a "me too", however on an Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15"
I noticed this the first time about 3 months ago, recently it's become more and more common.
Here's a video capture of what i'm seeing.

Sep 30, 2013 7:22 AM in response to Wojzoby Stjoan,My early 2011 MBP 15" has the same problems as well. I was watching a flash movie when the computer froze. Now it's getting stuck at the apple logo at start up with horizontal stripes on the screen. When I try to boot in windows I get vertical stripes over the screen and finally a blue screen resulting in a reboot.
Already more than 660.000 views and 2100 replies only on this topic alone and Apple isn't doing anything about it. A bit frustrating to say at least.

Sep 30, 2013 11:13 AM in response to Stjoanby Wojzo,Would this be covered by the elusive "Flat rate" repair?
I'm weighing up my options, no computer means loss of income, at the moment I'm either going to buy a cheap notebook and wait in the hope that Apple will do a out of warranty recall/repair or try to get it fixed at an authorised repair centre under the flat rate repair. I'm in a country where I don't speak the local language so some "facts" might be good when i go to the auth Apple centre.

Sep 30, 2013 11:20 AM in response to Wojzoby Airbum88,If Apple is doing a recall, I wouldn't hold my breath for them. It could take a while before we hear any response from them, if they are going to give one.
I seems like the flat rate repair also applies to logic board replacement but this option is only available to customers in the US or Japan. I believe it's $310.

Sep 30, 2013 11:43 AM in response to Airbum88by saramwrap,That is the pricing for Tier 1 service, which is the lowest rate offered for 15" MacBook Pros in immaculate physical condition. As I understand it, there are four tiers, each one a few hundred bucks more expensive than the last one, and the repair depot will select a tier based on the condition of your computer. If it has some dents and dings (and Apple's official dent detection tool can diagnose dents that are less than a millimeter deep), you might go up to Tier 2, which was quoted to me as $610. Tier 3 would be for more serious damage. I've only heard of Tier 4 being quoted (at $1200 or more!) when someone has a machine that has been damaged by tampering - unauthorized service, non-Apple parts, etc.
The Genius Bar that initially diagnoses your machine and sends it into the depot for you will quote you a cost based on the tier that they think is appropriate... once it makes it to the depot, the folks there may re-quote at a different tier. I was told that if that happened, they'd call me to find out if I was willing to authorize a more costly tier of service. Fortunately, I stayed at Tier 2 and didn't get the dreaded phone call.
So I always caution people who latch onto the idea of $310 service - your machine may or may not qualify for that level depending on its condition. I was stuck with Tier 2 even though my laptop only had one very subtle dent, but that was enough to bump it up. The higher tiers may not be as competitive with in-store repair service - for my MacBook Pro, Tier 2 service at $610 is more expensive than a logic board replacement at $525. That said, if they do an in-store logic board replacement, the 90-day warranty only covers the logic board. If you paid a bit more for the depot repair, the 90-day warranty covers the whole laptop.

Sep 30, 2013 11:49 AM in response to saramwrapby Airbum88,saram> did you end up paying the repair fee for the logic board replacement for the 2nd time?
-
Sep 30, 2013 11:56 AM in response to saramwrapby Wojzo,Thanks Saramwrap for the detailed info.
It looks like I don't have an AASP in Bosnia anyway, going to take it to an AAR tomorrow and see what they can offer in the way of a replacement part (and cost) but I think for the time being i'll be picking up a cheap(er) laptop (not apple) just so I can get some work done.

Sep 30, 2013 11:59 AM in response to Airbum88by saramwrap,The first in-store logic board replacement (in June) cost $525, and the second replacement (about a week later) was covered under the warranty of that repair. After extensive negotiation, the Apple Store agreed to waive the cost of the flat-rate depot repair for the third logic board replacement because of the $525 spent less than 90 days ago to resolve the exact same issues. That was at the discretion of the store manager and I was told it was a very unusual thing for them to offer - I was very fortunate that they were willing to work with me and take the amount already spent under consideration.

Sep 30, 2013 12:30 PM in response to Rensoomby Vicente Alfonso,Ok, listen.
I was talking to Apple for the same problem. There insn´t any way to resolve this for free.
They said me that the only way to do something is writting here http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and go to an Apple Store with our mbp. And wait...
My problem costed 496 euros, to replaced the logic board. It is The only method to resolve the GPU problem.
If nobody take the mbp and go to an Apple store or write in the link before, there´s no way to make noise. Because they told me that the forum isn´t enough to complain about.
I´m not happy about it, but without my computer I can´t work, so... I couldn´t wait.
Meanwhile my mbp is working.

Oct 1, 2013 6:03 AM in response to The-Nixby Wojzo,So multiple repairs to get the same issue fixed?
Since I'm out of warranty, and there's no AASP here I'm looking at swapping the board out myself (if I can find one that's in stock). But since the issue appears to be endemic to Early 2011 I was considering late 2011 or unibody 2012.
It looks like I may have been pushing my luck with unibody 2012 as by all accounts it wont work (chipset changes etc) but the Late 2011 looks like it might work.
I haven't been able to find any reports of Late 2011 MBPs having the same issue - can anyone shed some light?
-
Oct 1, 2013 6:10 AM in response to Wojzoby Airbum88,i have a late 2011 and I have issues with it.
there are quite a few people with late 2011 mpbs. i suspect they are fewer in number than early 2011 simply because the early 2011 has been around longer. some of the early 2011s and late 2011s share the same logic board and gpu. give a few more months and i suspect a lot more late 2011s will start to appear with more problems.
