Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

    I don't think they can legally give you a referb. But it doesn't matter much to me. After applecare and the amex extension, it's warrantied for four years. By then I'll be ready for a new computer. I'm just looking for some more

    After installing the 10.6.7 update, things appear to have stabilized. The yes >/dev/null + photobooth test doesn't hang anymore, nor does me swamping the system with the onslaught of graphical tasks that I did before.
    As a bonus, it fixed the speaker issues as well. Turns out the speakers weren't bad, they were just being overdriven.

    I'm running smcfancontroller and gfxcardstatus at 5800 avg. speeds and on integrated graphics only, and it has been sitting with nothing open and still running at 99 degrees. I am on 10.6.7.

    what test are you referring to? the smallluxgpu test has been the gold standard for me since it truly maxes out the GPU & CPU to their maximum temps. If you pass that after 5mins (usually not required so long) then i'd say you were safe heat-wise. Still probably the driver issues that existed for the people who dont fail here.

    it's not a test, just a controller. 99deg. is ok?

    I'd do it just so I could sleep better at night. Honestly though, if the problem is fixed then you're fine. If it's not then you'll find out sooner or later. It's not like those tests can make your computer explode or something.

    @fastasleep

    The command 'yes' sends your personal information to greasy fellow in Chechnya surrounded by Mountain Dew and Cheetos. That or it just displays 'y' over and over again. One of the two

    I wish apple would have told us all that this pending update was coming out BEFORE it came out so I could have tried it. I just returned my machine today and two hours later the update comes out! Hahaha such is life. I'll special order the SSD one next time anyways

    Hey guys... I have not experienced a crash on any of the 3 test machines for the last 30-45 minutes.

    I do still however have some residual funkiness on the external monitor plugged into the mini-display port - here's video I took of it occurring: http://www.youtube.com/user/johnkirker#p/u/1/pJ3ItL4_k6Q

    Hopefully the replacement machine on the way will fix this.

    Geekbench scores are all similar or better after 10.6.7 update.

    Now to return these 2 books to Apple.

    I'm not however thrilled with the 3-4 dozen hours I've lost due to this issue - nor are my clients. And I don't want iTunes store credit for my time, but I'd be happy with a new iPhone5 in July.

    Later,
    John

    I run one app a game called civilization 5 and it has frozen my computer every 1 to 2 hours in. Also it has failed while using Final cut express twice. Cursor moves but the whole system is basically dead. It requires a power button hold down and restart. Starting to think this new Mac Pro was a poor choice. I've had it for about two weeks now, fresh off the boat from China- Thinking I might need a full refund?

    themachintoshdaddy, that was for someone else. Second, running in integrated wasnt an issue before, just the discrete. So re-run in discrete and see what happens. And you probably should try the smallluxgpu for consistency @ max settings [1024*768 on 8cores+GPU].

    PS. @Keggman12 - I had the tested the developer release of 10.6.7 as of last Friday and it still had in the same issues.

    @Chullo

    I was referring to the Terminal /dev/null redirection test with Photobooth. It went fine.

    Also although i didn't run the XBENCH before, I ran after installing update and there were no screen lockups on integrated setting.

    What smallluxgpu test are you referring to?
