Q: MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

    Thanks for mentioning that jkirker! I am sad that I might have jumped the gun! Will remedy as soon as the refund is credited back and if people keep saying positive things about the update.

    @ideazinfinite, download this and run it @ the previously mentioned settings. It'l significantly tax your machine and if you have a problem it'l fail in probably 30s.

    Brand new 2011, I am soooo glad to see this !!!! I thought mine was just a single defective unit or I was using it out of its abilities- Civilization 5 kills it almost every time or renderings in Final Cut. I am still under my time to return but I was told a restocking fee would apply, yeah I am not happy so I'm holding out for Apple to admit its fault and fix our high priced purchases Customers are right when we stand together-

    Guy. I think you're not reading the posts. The problem appears to be fixed. You just have to install today's software update. You're about a 3 hours late to the righteous indignation party..

    I returned mine today no questions asked and full refund! (I did explain this situation) They should only be able to charge restocking fee if its buyer's remorse - defective units would get full refund. But, I think I jumped the gun - if you can wait and test this update (and let us know!) I'd like to see how it goes!

    @ Keggman, yea...I'm thinking you may have jumped the gun indeed. I got a new one from them and this isn't yet updated 2 yet I still don't have the issue I had before. A issue that I could reliably reproduce btw.

    I just ran that app for about 10 minutes in interactive mode and hit the arrow keys a few times to restart the raytracing. Not sure if I did it right, but Photo Booth in the background was hella choppy, so I assume it was taxing the **** out of the processor. No freeze, nothin.

    I'm now uber happy with this machine and patiently await my box from Newegg with the 750gb 7200 drive and 8GB RAM so I can get my software installed and running on this beast today and give it some "real world" tests. (made even more exciting by the fact I'm working off a 2GB Mac mini booted off an external firewire drive as my old MBP is at the vet

    @Chullo

    I'm sorry but I might have missed those previous configuration. I'm running this test now: CPU*8 + GPU (800x600) Luxball glass Scene in Interactive Mode. Its been about 2 mins now, the system is struggling but no crashes/lockups so far...

    If you ran it @ 1024 (plus 8core) and didn't experience a hard freeze (requiring a restart), then your DEFINITELY good temperature wise.

    My 13" MBP has just started freezing when I use Safari and only when I go to one specific site (tsn.ca). I have cleared the cache and started over-it was fine for 3-4 searches then started again. The only thing that works is the power button-so I have to shut down and restart.

    It took me 20 minutes to crash it before. I have not ran it, but given the other tests are okay, I feel confidant it is taken care of. For grins I might run it tomorrow while practicing (I am an opera singer).

    They just lowered some of the prices (literally in the last hour as I was already on this custom build page and refreshed it)

    Keep up with the updates guys - if all is good, I might just order me an SSD one later tonight to make up for the one I returned earlier today! I need to learn some patience

    Messa Mac, your issue would be unrelated here though, sorry for the news. Your 13 uses only integrated graphics, so that's definitely a driver issue and or software/firmware conflict on your machine. Hopefully they fixed your issue as well if it's related to apple's drivers.
