Mar 21, 2011 11:16 PM in response to Rensoomby dynek,I installed 10.6.7 and I am still able to make the desktop freeze, I did it twice.
What I must say is that I force the use of the integrated graphic chip using gfxCardStatus, would that be the issue ? -
Mar 21, 2011 11:23 PM in response to dynekby iFrodo,If it's with the Google Chrome Fish experiment run under Google Chrome, then no that's a Chrome bug. The fish experiment doesn't crash on other browsers (Firefox 4 and Webkit (nightly build)). -

Mar 22, 2011 12:06 AM in response to Rensoomby dynek,Thanks iFrodo and the other people reporting it's chrome's fault.
What I can say is that I was never able to reproduce a freeze except with chrome and after having ssh'd into my MacBook I saw in system.log a line that says chrome crashed badly. -
Mar 22, 2011 1:14 AM in response to Rensoomby Gustavo Pro user,Me tooSame ........... I'm pretty sad about my new MBP more than 3k on this (...). I used to be a Mac defender and this is my second MBP just bough this one since my old MBP 2008 (old frame) expired the APP. I'm cant afford this kind of problem, i work in my machine and travel a lot, outside US, to places that doesn't have apple stores anywhere. MY 2008 MBP IS MUCH BETTER THAN THIS ONE FOR SURE!
............HARD FREEZ AND POOR PERFORMANCE UNDER LIGHT WORK CONDITIONS(and graphic problems too)............

updating to 10.6.7 fixed the crash issue.
If it didn't fix it for you then i'd bet your issue isn't the same as the rest of the peeps in this thread. I have 2 macbook pros and both were solved with this update. Every person i know with a 2011 15/17 inch macbook pro had this issue, and all of them haven't been able to make it crash since updating.
If you are still having an issue, return it for a refund/replacement. -
Mar 22, 2011 1:45 AM in response to wonslungby shishlik,Are u sure about the fix of new update because i haven't opened my mac from the box.......Does it fix?please help... -
Mar 22, 2011 1:56 AM in response to shishlikby operaman1,I have ran all of the tests that crashed my machine previously, and it works now. So it seems to be fine now. -
Mar 22, 2011 2:16 AM in response to shishlikby fastasleep, same here. all freezing has stopped no matter how hard i push the machine. have tried all the ways i previously locked it up before the update, then since the update also tried that raytrace util and the yes > /dev/null thing and as much other stuff as i could throw at it without installing more software and it's totally fine now.
since then i've upgraded the hard drive to a 7200 750 and installed 8GB of ram (g. skill from newegg) and haven't had a single problem yet. very, very happy with this machine so far — quite the upgrade from my MBP3,1, which should be back from Apple tomorrow with a fixed 8600M. Wanna buy it instead? -
Mar 22, 2011 2:29 AM in response to media sorcererby iFrodo,The USB Tethering issue is another issue that has nothing to do with the current one fixed in 10.6.7.
The USB Tethering issue is due to bugs on the AppleUSBEthernet.kext extension when run on 64bits kernel. It's not new and not at all specific to MBP 2011, any mac started on 64bits kernel (by pressing 64 at startup or by default for Mac Pro and MacBook Pro 2011) have this issue. This require a specific fix of the kernel extension I mentionned, and has nothing to do with the present problem discussed here.
For the USB Tethering issue, please see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2783320&start=0&tstart=0
Workarounds are either Bluetooth or WiFi tethering. -
Mar 22, 2011 3:26 AM in response to Rensoomby dtjnr,I have done the update to 10.6.7 and have had 2 freezes in the first 10 minutes since disabling gfxCardStatus.
I used my system all day yesterday forcing the integrated graphics and didn't have even the slightest issue.
Congratulations to all those that it solved the issue for, but it looks like mine's still a lemon!
Out of interest, the freezes seem to divide my screen in two, swapping the left side with the right, mouse still moves but no other input works. This was the same before and after the update. -

Hrm.....is it possible you somehow didn't download the 10.6.7 for 2011 macbook pros and got the generic 10.6.7?
Also, this isnt' the fish test right? Because that isn't the same issue and shouldn't be used as a metric. -
Mar 22, 2011 3:38 AM in response to RKofCALby iamjohnsname,If my **ing airport would work for more than ten seconds I'd download this update.
What a joke.
Any comments on possible damage already done to components as a result of overheats? As I wrote in an earlier post, my CPUs were reaching 99C.
Surely that could have a damaging effect on the longevity of my components?
