FILE Sharing: Everything coming up Read Only

I got a new hardrive. Thought that was the culprit, but I repaired permissions, repaired disk. Make all file and parent folders read/ write.
Nevertheless, everything on my little home network comes up read only.

I'm tapped out. I can open and work on files but cannot save anything.

The files originate from a new external hard drive via my imac. I'm opening them on my laptop. any ideas appreciated. thanks.

imac 27" (12/09) 13" macbook (4/08), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

"Get Info" (command-i) on your hard drives. Under "Sharing & Permissions" at the very bottom of the window be sure that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is NOT check marked. (Your internal drive will not have this option)

Have you added the account name from the laptop on the Sharing and permissions table in the get info window for the drive?

thanks Dogg, this is my set up. I have had many interns in the past log into my network and were good to go and the files were read/ write. I've never had to add their laptops in. (but where is this, "you have custom access, and what is my laptop called, where do I see that name)
