I upgraded and lost my office 2008 HELP!!!!!

So i bought my macbook pro 13 last week. Then they say a new one came out, so i researched on here and everyone said if it is within 14 days to return it and get the new one. So today I did and forgot that I had installed office 2008. So when i left I didnt have it switched over. So now 2 hours later I remember and call the apple store, only for them to say they cant help me. Is that true, can nothing be done for a product key that was used for 8 days? Can I not get that back? Any help would be great. I am new to mac computers. Thanks!
