MS Office Not importing Fonts

Since installing MS Office Mac 2011 not all of my fonts are available. Arial, Times New Roman in particular. They show up in the font library but are not accessible in Word or PowerPoint in the drop down or elsewhere in the apps. The documents open and show up blank. If I type it underlines as if the words are mispelled, I can select all and change the font to one in the drop down. It's all very bizarre. And frustrating.

Kurt Lang is our resident expert on fonts, and in his FAQ on OSX and Fonts he, states:

+Office 2011:+
+As with Office 2008, the fonts installed by Office 2011 go to the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ folder. And as before, it creates conflicts with the existing similar fonts installed by OS X. If you already have the Office 2008 set of fonts on your hard drive, Office 2011 will replace them. There are also 27 more fonts than in Office 2008. 62 Mac legacy TrueType fonts installed by Office 2011 are identical to those from Office 2008. Six typefaces which used to be legacy fonts are now .ttf fonts. Usually such changes are to fix minor flaws in the fonts, or to improve kerning and kerning pairs for a more pleasing look.+

+The Office 2011 installation creates a mixed bag of older and newer conflicting fonts. You need to manually sort them out as described next.+

+During the initial install of Office 2011, newer .ttf font sets replace those installed by OS X, Leopard and Snow Leopard. The older fonts are deprecated to a new folder named /Library/Fonts Disabled/. They are:+

Arial.ttf
+Arial Italic.ttf+
+Arial Bold.ttf+
+Arial Bold Italic.ttf+
+Brush Script.ttf+
+Times New Roman.ttf+
+Times New Roman Italic.ttf+
+Times New Roman Bold.ttf+
+Times New Roman Bold Italic.ttf+
Verdana.ttf
+Verdana Italic.ttf+
+Verdana Bold.ttf+
+Verdana Bold Italic.ttf+
Wingdings.ttf
+Wingdings 2.ttf+
+Wingdings 3.ttf+

+There is no need to keep the fonts in the /Library/Fonts Disabled/ folder since identically named newer versions have been installed. You can delete the entire Fonts Disabled folder if you wish.+

I had the same problem. I received a Word document with Arial and Times New Roman fonts in it. Large sections of the document were blank. If I selected all and replaced the font with something else the text would be visible but the formatting was off.

The solution was found on the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) website, Font Weeding.

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/fontweeding.html

I followed the directions. Some of the font duplicates that were turned off were the newer fonts. I checked each one using the Command R (Reveal in Finder) function. I moved the older fonts to the trash and turned the newer fonts (typically dated in 2010) back on.

I emptied the trash and restarted the Mac. Problem solved. The documents came up with all text showing.

Becca, This is not necessarily a reply to you since I am assuming you have fixed your problem from 2 years ago but am posting in case someone else has the same problem. I tried all of the above and still no resolution. I had to go into my font book, click on the fonts I was having a problem with, Arial & Times New Roman, open the drop down, then click on the duplicate font and delete. I tried running the duplicate font tool in font book and all of the other really good suggestions above, but to no avail. I hope this helps someone else out there.
