Q: can't delete purchased music from iPhone

Apologies if this is addressed somewhere on this forum. I searched, but gave up after about 45 minutes.

I have 24 songs purchased through iTunes on my phone, all of which have been transferred to my iTunes library (and multiple backups). They've been synced to my iPod (not the phone one). I cannot delete these songs off my phone. I have been able to delete other songs on my iPhone and Purchased on iPhone playlists and the entire playlists. The only way I've been able to get these songs off the phone is by unchecking the "Sync Music" option altogether in iTunes and then syncing my phone. If I recheck "Sync Music," those 24 songs are still there. I made a new playlist for my phone with 35 songs and ended up with 59 songs on my phone.

I'm baffled by this. Not a huge deal, but it's very annoying, and I'd love to get an answer to how to delete them (or find out if it's just not possible). If I can't delete them, I'll know never to download anything from iTunes off my phone again.

Thanks much for any help!

My solution isn't a complete delete but at least it is almost as good. I had albums my (at the time) 13 year old son purchased on my account and not only does he now dislike the music, I've always hated it. I found no way to PERMANENTLY delete. But I followed these steps on this help page and at least I don't have to see those hated albums anymore in my Music app choices.

Easy directions to follow with this hot link:

iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases

No, it's not perfect, not forever gone, but my aggravation level at least lowered with this half fix. I did the actual changes via my iMac, but it mirrored the deleted (hidden) purchases from view instantly on my iPad and iPhone as well. Ah, visual peace again.

Yes, the little cloud shows, but when you then go back into Settings>Music, and turned OFF the show all music switch, those songs are gone.  hooray!

    @bayoukitty
Did you get this worked out?  There were so many posts.  What absolutely worked for me was this suggestion:  Settings>Music make sure Show All Music is clicked on.  Go to music and swipe each song you DON'T want, click delete, and the download cloud should appear.  Once you've done that to all of the songs you want to delete, go back to Settings>Music and click OFF Show All Music.  It works :-)

Thanks, it  W O R K E D ! ! ! ! ! !. Great solution. This problem was driving me mad. Every time I turn on radio and phone connected via Bluetooth it starts playing this GHOST song automatically, I deleted this song ages ago.

If it doesn't work for you guys then you are not following all steps correctly.

"...Hi! Ok I just figured out how to delete the songs!

    so here's the deal:

You didn't press the little download cloud yet. You can't delete something that technically isn't there.

    1. So go to SETTINGS >>> MUSIC and "TURN ON (!!!!)" #SHOW ALL MUSIC

    ALL MUSIC ON.png

    2. After that go to your music collection on the phone and find your song. Press the cloud to download the songs you want to delete

    Download song.png

    3. Go back to SETTINGS >>> MUSIC and "TURN OFF (!!!!)" #SHOW ALL MUSIC. Then go to the songs you want to delete, slide and delete! :-)

OFF all music and delete song.png

    Hope that helped! ..."

What ended up working for me:

    On The Phone:

Settings - Music - Show all music- off

Settings - iTunes - Automatic Downloads (music) - off

At this point the downloaded purchases are still in the phone and need to be deleted!

This step may be unnecessary, but I'm including it because that's what I did: Connect to iTunes and uncheck Sync Music, then click Sync to remove your music from the phone.

    Back on your phone:

Settings - General - Usage - Storage - Music- Swipe and delete all music (this will delete the remaining downloaded purchases)

    Back on iTunes:

Check Sync music again, and sync - this will replace all of the music you actually want.

Not sure if this will help anyone but here goes.  Basically was having the same problem with 10 songs that wouldn't delete from my iPhone 5S and yet at the same time they weren't showing up when I connected the phone to iTunes via my iMac.  These were songs that I had previously purchased for friends through iTunes and wanted to remove them from my phone.

My solution was to connect to iTunes through my iMac and sync the artists whose songs I couldn't delete from the phone.  Once the songs had been loaded on the phone through the iTunes sync, the right to left swipe delete motion worked and I was able to remove all of the unwanted songs.

Easy peasy.  But sure was frustrating until I figured it out.

    Best of luck!

    Hi

I've gone through all of the information and would like to say thanks for all of the comments.

The solution that seems to be recommended the most is downloading the songs from the icloud and then deleting them, using the swiping method and then de-activating the show all music option from the settings of the iphone/ipad etc.

However this to me only seems to be a temporary fix. Is there not something that is a bit more permanent?
