bi-directional Mini DisplayPort

I have a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, have my cable box currently connected to my 27-inch iMac... how do I get the "bi-directional" thing working? Shouldn't the iMac switch to being a display as soon as I connect the Mini DisplayPort?

Is it not possible to watch cable TV on my iMac?

If it's possible, how do I do it?

(So far, the only thing I was able to do with the adapter is use my TV as a secondary monitor for my computer.)

The mini-DisplayPort is only bi-directional when the signal it is receiving is a DisplayPort signal. That adapter is uni-directional, m-DP to HDMI and nothing more. If the device that you wish to use with your 27' iMac in Target Display Mode does not have native DisplayPort output then you need a US$150 converter from Atlona or Kanex.
