How can I check if my ethernet port is working?

How can I check if my ethernet port is working? I had a cable burnout and had to replace the network cable linking my minimac to the router, and now it doesn't work. The same new cable will link other devices to the router, but not the minimac, so the problem must be here. How do I check the hardware and the software connections?

TIA

minimac, Mac OS X (10.5.5), I also use ubuntu linux
