Q: Does iPad 2 WiFi Really Have No GPS???

The tech specs page shows no GPS on the Wifi model, is this true? If so that is absolutely ridiculous, why would they leave out the GPS from the WiFi model???

ok chris, well listen i dont believe apple using true gps, the gps should work whether or not the 3G Radio is on it doesnt... i have a htc x7500 and the GPS works when cell radio is off...... i have a notebook with a 3G Radio and the GPS works only when 3G Radio is on just like apple and that uses the 3G Radio to do GPS..... for all that money apple should be about to use an independent GPS.... the A-GPS might be true to some extent... maybe apple is lying about AGPS the cell towers are required by FCC laws to to have GPS because that what the feds and 911 use to track a call and apple is doing it in the reverse to map your location... to they cheating...

    Okay.

the gps should work whether or not the 3G Radio is on it doesnt

It should. Take it in to an Apple store to get checked out.

Note that you will not get maps downloaded without a cell or wifi signal present but the GPS is still working.

maybe apple is lying about AGPS the cell towers are required by FCC laws to to have GPS because that what the feds and 911 use to track a call and apple is doing it in the reverse to map your location...

    sigh...

If you have a wifi3GS then yes, it has (or should have) full GPS.  As posted above I reckon your best bet is to take it in and get it checked out.

Wifi only models do not support full GPS (like my 64GB Wifi only model)

But i have an iphone, so no problems! Head back to the Apple Store, they will help.

No need to take it to the apple store unless 4 iPhone4 is having the same issue...

An youre to sigh because what I said could be the fact... I never find iPhone gps to work the best unless youre in a heavily populated cell area....

    Think about it..

Except that it is not fact.

The iPhone and iPad 3G have GPS and pick up GPS data from GPS satellites with no cell or wifi.

How do you know the GPS is not working with no cell/wifi?

Maps will not get downloaded unless you have a cell/wifi but there are apps that allow you to download maps and save them in the app for the GPS to use when there is no signal.

Because I have a xoom and when I enable airplane mode on xoom and iphone4 the iPhone 4 map stops while the xoom doesnt the blue dot is still there unlike iphone4 it's not unless airplane mode is disabled. Also when I start maps on iPhone it never mention gps xoom does, oh while Im typing now I tried the same on my torch and gps works in airplane mode and it also says acquiring gps satellite I never remember seeing that on any of my iPhones I have owned all models.... Torch and xoom have a setting the disable actual gps radio iPhone doesn't which proves it depends on the cell towers....

You should sell your iPad and your iPhone and enjoy your torch and xoom.

    Good luck!

ok i see you're hurt by what i said but unless you can prove there is an actually GPS radio u should be carrying feelings... I don't need to sell my iphone 4 or iPad 2 that defeats the purpose of buying them in the first place... I'm just saying the GPS is not what it suppose to be apple making it seems like without 3G Radio GPS is impossible but its not if the use GPS Hardware and not rely on cell towers.... doesnt mean im giving up my ios devices, i got a mac pro latest model, mac book pro latest model, mac mini latest model, apple tv latest model, ipad 2 and iphone 4 as u see im an apple guy just like u but i aint no fool.....

not ignorant just that it doesn't work right...... should be able to you gps in air plane mode, gps should have its own switch.... and lastly no reason why wifi models shouldnt have gps unless it relies onthe 3G radio...

    Seriously?

    "shouldn't"?

So manufacturers cannot design products without your approval?

Apple did not install a GPS chip in the wifi only model.

You iPad and iPhone are broken.

GPS is just the ability of a device to receive signals from the GPS satellites in order to determine position. It is not really the ability to display ones location on a map. Using an app like MotionX GPS HD will show the source of the location data and with that app you can actually switch between the different modes of determining the device location. I suspect the GPS receiver is included mainly to support 3G operation and is not really meant to be a standalone device feature.
